All the recommendations of this hotel have justified themselves: the service is at a high enough level for Sri Lanka, and isolated cases with an untimely glass in a restaurant or outdated rooms do not spoil the overall impression. Squirrels run around the hotel, and several restaurants offer very high quality food. Nearby is the railway, which you can hear a little if you listen - but this is for those who like to find fault. Again, there are many shops nearby where you can leave a bunch of rupees for oils, teas and other souvenirs, since the exchange rate against the dollar is pleasant. New Year's program did not live up to expectations, but as far as I know, this is the norm for hotels in Sri - a lot of food but little activity. The ocean is of course gorgeous with its sunsets and waves! In general, I recommend it, but probably not by the New Year, so as not to overpay.
