The construction of the library was started by the architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and completed by his son Joseph Emmanuel in 1735. Copies of all Austrian publications, books by Austrian authors published abroad, and works on Austria are kept here. The collections contain more than 7.5 million copies of books, 180 thousand papyri, the oldest of which dates back to the XV century BC.

The large central hall of the Prunksaal houses a collection of books by Prince Eugene of Savoy. Its dome is decorated with a huge fresco by Daniel Gran. Sculptures of emperors by Paul Strudel and four large Venetian globes are installed in the hall. All this makes this part of the Hofburg one of the most valuable in artistic terms.

The figures on the facade were made by Lorenzo Mattieli in 1726. Above the main portal is a quadriga of horses ruled by Athena Pallas. She overcomes envy and ignorance.
To the right and left are two sculptural groups with gilded balls. This is the Atlas, which holds the celestial sphere with the attributes of astronomy and astrology, and Gaia, which holds the globe with the attributes of geometry and geography. The Atlas sculpture was damaged in a fire in 1848 and was restored by Hans Gasser.
