Monument Atomium

Atomium
Belgium, Brussel
The Atomium Monument, a structure 102 meters high and weighing 2,400 tons, is a structure in the form of an iron atom magnified 165 billion times. It consists of nine spheres with a diameter of 18 meters, interconnected by pipes. Inside the upper sphere, there is a restaurant and an observation deck, from where beautiful views of Brussels open up. In other areas, interesting scientific and educational exhibitions often take place, so the Atomium can also be called an educational center.

The Belgians have been competing with the French throughout their history, as well as the French with the Belgians. It became somehow insulting and envious of Brussels that there is such a famous tower in Paris and they decided not to lag behind and even get ahead. Repeating the history of the famous Parisian tower, the Belgians, like the French once, decided to hold the World Exhibition in 1958. Well, to build something for this exhibition to be remembered by everyone and forever. And so the Atomium was born.

For the EXPO-1958 exhibition in Brussels, the Atomium was built as a symbol of the atomic age and the use of atomic energy for peaceful purposes. Architect Andre Waterkeyn, according to one version, designed a beryllium atom enlarged billions of times (and not an iron atom, as is commonly believed). In the periodic table of chemical elements, beryllium is designated by the symbol "Be", which corresponds to the letter code of Belgium. Inside the Atomium there is an observation deck and a panoramic restaurant.

The Atomium is one of the symbols of the Belgian capital. A very unusual moment is a model of an iron molecule magnified 165 billion times. In the highest sphere there is an observation deck, from there, from a height of 100 meters, a breathtaking view of Brussels opens. You can go up there on a high-speed elevator in 20 seconds (one of the fastest in Europe), the entrance is paid. I recommend it to those who like thrills and beautiful views. I was there on a guided tour, but it's not difficult to get there on your own by tram.
