Escorial Monastery

El Escorial
Spain, Escorial
Escorial Monastery is located northwest of Madrid at the foot of the Sierra de Guadarrama. The building of the monastery was built in 1563-1584 under the guidance of the architect Juan Bautista de Toledo, a student of Michelangelo, for King Philip II. Initially, Escorial was planned only as a monastery in honor of St. Lawrence, but over time, the construction plan was changed. The complex is a rectangular building, in the center of which there is a church, to the south are the premises of the monastery, to the north - the palace. There are two large museums here, the collections of which contain information on construction and paintings of the 15th-17th centuries by artists such as Titian, El Greco, Tintoretto and many others.

Escorial (San Lorenzo de El Escorial) was erected at the direction of King Philip II in honor of St. Lawrence. The construction of the cult complex for Spain lasted from 1543 to 1584, the palace-monastery became an example of rationality. The powerful castle is designed in such a way that it depicts an inverted lattice, on which St. Lawrence: four towers at the corners of the building correspond to the legs, and the Palace of the Infantes corresponds to the handle of the lattice on which he was roasted alive.
