Royal Palace of La Magdalena

Real Palacio de La Magdalena, Summer residence of King Alfonso XIII, Magdalena Palace, Palacio de la Magdalena
Spain, Comarca de Santander
The Royal Palace of La Magdalena is located on the La Magdalena peninsula, in Santander, in northern Spain. The English-style palace was built at the beginning of the 20th century. as the summer residence of the royal family. In 1914, the royal stables in the style of a medieval English village were built nearby.
During the Second Republic, after the overthrow of the monarchy in Spain, the building of the palace was transferred to the International University of Menendez y Pelayo and it was associated with the university until 1982 - when the La Magdalena Palace was declared a historical monument.
The area of the palace complex occupies 28 hectares and, in addition to the palace itself, there is also a wonderful park with a small zoo (penguins, seals, fur seals and sea lions live); the open-air museum "Man and the Sea" about the brave sailors of Spain and Cantabria in the form of a parking of ships from three caravels; cafe and a huge playground. From the side of the palace, magnificent panoramas of the island of Mouro and its lighthouse open up.
Weddings and conferences are often held in the palace, and various festivities and concerts are held in the park.

Santander is not rich in architectural monuments. In 1941 it was devastated by a catastrophic fire. Almost everything that is there is a relatively recent reconstruction, but thanks to this, the city leaves the impression of a single architectural complex with the charm of a luxury seaside resort. Alfonso XIII, the great-grandfather of the current king of Spain, is honored in these parts. Thanks to him, Santander became a prestigious seaside resort. The king was not the worst, but several revolutions that shook the country a century ago after its defeat in the war that the United States imposed on Spain, and the subsequent loss of its status as a Great Power, forced him in 1931.
