Roman obelisk in Place de la Republique of Arles

Obelisque d'Arles, Arles Obelisk
France, Arles
The Roman obelisk is located at Place de la République of Arles. It was installed in the 4th century in the center of the Roman Circus, then it was destroyed and rebuilt in its current location in 1389.

The red granite obelisk is 20 meters high. In 1866, it was restored, and richly decorated monarchist symbols, destroyed during the Revolution, returned to it.

On the Place de la Republique there is an obelisk dating from the 4th century. Previously, it towered in the middle of the Roman Circus, but with the destruction of the Circus, it fell, split, went underground and was found only in 1389. In the 17th century, it was transported and installed in the center of the main city square, opposite the newly rebuilt City Hall, in honor of the Sun King Louis, which was all the more logical, since the obelisk is an ancient symbol of the Sun. In 1866, the architect Jacques Peytre brought water to the plinth, so that the obelisk turned out to be towering in the middle of a small fountain.
