Fort Nacional

Fort National
France, Saint-Malo
Fort Nacional was built in 1689 by the architect Marquis de Vauban to protect the port of Saint-Malo from pirate attacks. The fortress is located on the Illet rock, on the site of the former port lighthouse. The fort reflected enemy squadrons and was also used as a prison. During the Second World War, the fortification was significantly damaged by the bombing of the allies. You can get to Fort Nancional only at low tide.

This fort can only be reached at low tide, so the question arises "how was it built if the tides are the highest here? " Historians answer us that they began to build it on the Ile rock in 1689. The fort was part of the Saint-Malo defense system, which included several other forts on the islands around this port. The project was developed by the famous fortifier Sebastian le Pré tre de Vauban, and the local architect Simeon de Garanzho directly supervised the construction. During its existence, the fort changed its name four times.

Having visited Saint-Malo (France), you cannot help but see from its fortress wall a small island with a fort located on it, called Fort National. The fort served as the protection of Saint-Malo itself, which in some historical period even managed to be an independent state. The fort itself during its history performed not only fortification functions, but also managed to be a prison. You can only go to the island with Fort Nacional at low tide. At high tide, it is a full-fledged island. The fort looks very photogenic at any time of the day, so I highly recommend going and looking at it several times from dawn to dusk.
