Samaria Gorge

Lefka Ori National Park, Samaria Gorge, National Park Lefka Ori
Greece, Chania
The Samaria Gorge, as well as the Lefka Ori National Park, the largest gorge in Europe, is located on the southwestern tip of the island of Crete in Chania. One of the most famous sights of Crete. The length of the gorge is about 16 kilometers, and the width varies from 3.5 to 300 meters. The gorge got its name from the village of Samaria, which in turn is named after the church of Osias Maryas.

The purpose of the reserve is to protect the unique nature of the White Mountains (Lefka Ori) and especially the endemic Cretan mountain goat kri-kri. In addition to kri-kri, other rare species of animals and birds live in the gorge. This is a wild cat (currently extremely rare), various types of eagles, martens, badgers.
Since 1931, the branch of the Hellenic Mountaineering Society in the city of Chania organized tour groups through the gorge. Since 1962, since the formation of the national park, hiking has become more systematic, and in 1969, the first sales of tours in the gorge by travel agencies began. In winter and spring, during heavy rains, a stormy stream of water runs along the bottom of the gorge and stones break from the walls. At this time, the national park is closed to tourists. Overnight stays in the gorge are prohibited all year round. The entrance to the route is paid.

One of the most beautiful national parks in the world. 16 km pink ravine. You can go the route from the bottom up or vice versa. Crossing from above - at the beginning along a steep rocky road 3 km. Further more interesting - you have to cross the river several times. Lots of vegetation that is unique - oleander, for example. The wild goats on the hillside are very funny. I advise you to take mountain boots. . You can go with sneakers (which I did), but you can get badly injured. Take food with you.
