Temple of Asklepion

Asklepion
Greece, Kos
A few kilometers from the city of Kos is Asklepion - the temple of the healer god Asclepius, famous for its medical school. This building, located on three terraces, was built at the beginning of the 3rd century BC. on the site of an earlier temple of Apollo dating from the 5th century BC.

On the lowest terrace on the north side, a rectangular zone 90 m long and 45 m wide stands out, surrounded on three sides by Doric columns, in the back of which there was a series of rooms. On the north side, to the left of the entrance, you can see the remains of three buildings from the Roman or late Hellenistic period. In the northeast corner of the rectangular area, a bath was later built, later transformed into a church. A small museum adjoins it. Along the south side of the terrace stands the retaining wall of the next terrace. To the left, between the second and third pillars, there is a sacred spring. To the right, in front of an unsupported section of the wall, stands a small naiscos temple dedicated to Nero, "the new Asclepius."
From here steps lead to the second terrace - the oldest part of the sanctuary. At the top of the steps is an altar which, in its present form, appeared later than the little temple of Asclepius (400 BC); only scant traces remain of the early temple at this site. To the east of the altar is a pillared Ionic temple (6x9 columns) which may have been dedicated to Apollo. To the southwest was a semi-circular exedra, and in front of it, behind the old temple, a Roman building on older foundations.

Between these two buildings there is a monumental staircase 11 m wide, leading to the third terrace, lying 12 m higher, with a later (2nd century BC) sanctuary of Asclepius - a Doric temple surrounded by columns (6x11 columns). Climbing up the hill (about 45 minutes), you can reach the source that provided the ancient city with water.
