Monument to Lajos Kossuth

Kossuth Monument
Hungary, Budapest
The monument to the Hungarian statesman and revolutionary Lajos Kossuth is located in the park on the square of the same name in Budapest. Being elected prime minister and ruler-president of Hungary during the revolution of 1848-1849, Kossuth proclaimed the independence of the country, announced the final abolition of serfdom. After the suppression of the revolution, Kossuth spent 45 years in exile and died in Italy in 1894, but, by decision of the Hungarian Parliament, was buried in Budapest.
In 1927, with a huge gathering of the public, a sculptural composition was opened in memory of the heroes of the revolution of 1848-1849, the work of the sculptor Janos Horvey. In the center of the light marble monument was the figure of Lajos Kossuth, and on both sides there were 4 figures of his associates, standing in calm, even thoughtful poses. Under the communist regime, the first monument was considered not too heroic and it was dismantled and installed in the park of the city of Dombovar. In its place, in 1952, the sculptor Strobl installed a red marble pedestal with a bronze figure of Kossuth in the center, with his right hand invitingly directed forward and 6 bronze figures personifying the people of Hungary. During the major reconstruction of Lajos Kossuth Square in 2012-14, the Kossuth monument was returned from Dombovar and re-erected in its original place.
