The Basilica of San Petronio is located in Piazza Maggiore in central Bologna. The length of the building is 132 meters, its width - 60 meters, the height of the vaults - 45 meters, volume - 270.000 cubic meters. The cathedral is the fifth largest church in Europe. His wall paintings and polychrome stained glass windows are also of great interest.

The cathedral is dedicated to St. Petronius, who in the V century was the bishop of Bologna and the patron saint of this city. The beginning of construction of the building dates back to 1390, when the city commissioned the architect Antonio di Vincenzo to build a Gothic cathedral in the Gothic style in Bologna, which should exceed the size of St. Peter's Cathedral in Rome. However, after the intervention of the Pope - and Bologna at that time was part of the Papal States - the size of the cathedral was reduced. Currently, the cathedral has the title of "small basilica" (Basilica minor). In 1530, in San Petronio, Pope Clement VII was crowned emperor of the Holy Roman Empire by Charles V.
The construction of the cathedral lasted several centuries. Thus, after the completion of works on the facade, in 1393 the creation of side chapels began, which was completed in 1479. Decorative work in the central part of the basilica was carried out under the direction of Girolamo Reynaldo in 1646-1658. Work on the facade of the building continued until the creation of new, side portals designed by architect Jacopo della Quercia. But then they were stopped. Despite the involvement of several famous architects, including Baldassare Peruzzi, Andrea Palladio, Giacomo Barozzi and Vignola, the facade of the building is still unfinished.

In 1505-41, the outstanding music theorist Giovanni Spataro worked in the basilica (first as a singer, then as a conductor). In the 1660s, the famous Italian astronomer Giovanni Domenico Cassini worked here. In 1665, according to his calculations, the "Giovanni Cassini meridian" was installed here, 66.8 meters long.
The cathedral was handed over to the church only in 1929, consecrated in 1954. In 2000, the sacred relics of St. Petronius, kept in the Cathedral of San Stefano, were moved here.
