Villa Medici Petraia

Villa Medicea La Petraia, Villa Petraia
Italy, Florence
Villa Petraia is one of the many villas owned by the Medici family. The villa is located in Castello, not far from Florence. In 1394 the palace belonged to the Brunelleschi family, in 1422 the villa passed to the Strozzi family, and in 1544 it was bought by Cosimo de Medici for his son Ferdinando.

Later, starting from 1588, the villa is being expanded and landscaping the surrounding area, which stretched for almost 10 years. The land was very rocky, and behind the estate there was a stone grotto, hence the name of the villa "petraia", literally meaning "quarry where stone is mined." Among the masterpieces of art now stored in the villa are the bronze sculpture of Venus by Giambologna and the frescoes by Volterrano and Cosimo Daddi.

The Medici villas Petraia and di Casello were built in the Middle Ages and bought by the Medici in the 16th century. Villas are surrounded by wonderful gardens, considered one of the best in Europe. If you are tired of queues and crowds of tourists, then go to the villas. It was in the days of the Medici was out of town, and now you can get there by city bus. Both villas are located next to each other - on foot about 20 minutes. Entrance to Villa Petraia itself is free. But cunning. At a certain time (they have a schedule, and maybe on the website) the security guard gathers a group of people who want (when we were there, there were 2 of us and 2 more Poles - beauty) takes us around the villa and tells, but in Italian.
