Church of San Pietro in Montorio

Chiesa di San Pietro in Montorio, San Pietro in Montorio
Italy, Rome
The church of San Pietro in Montorio is located on the square of the same name on the slope of the Janiculum hill. The first mention of the church dates back to the 9th century, but in 1472, under Pope Sixtus IV, the temple was rebuilt. The Pope willingly attracted funds from foreign kings for the restoration of the complex. In particular, among the patrons was the King of France Louis XI, as well as the Spanish kings Isabella and Ferdinand, who ordered the construction of the Little Temple of Bramante.
The Church of San Pietro in Montorio has a rather modest appearance, but a richly decorated interior. The chapels of the temple are decorated with frescoes by Sebastiano del Piombo and Baldassare Peruzzi. In 1876, the royal court of Savoy sold the temple complex to Spain. The complex still belongs to the Spanish state, where the Royal Spanish Academy in Rome was located in the buildings of the monastery.

The Church of San Pietro in Montorio also includes the Temple, as the Romans affectionately call it. This is a small temple of Bramante, around which there are always many excursions.

The church arose on the site where the Apostle Peter was believed to have been crucified (in fact, he was executed in the circus of Nero - now the Vatican Cathedral of St. Peter). The facade of the church is very modest and inexpressive, it is easy to pass by. Take 20 minutes and go to the courtyard of the church. There you will find a real miracle of the Renaissance - the little temple of Bramante. It makes no sense to describe, you have to go and see. Exclusively for Bramante.
