Monument of the Battle of Grunwald

Monument to the Battle of Grunwald
Poland, Krakow
The monument of the Battle of Grunwald was built in 1910 on Jan Matejko Square in Krakow, in honor of the 500th anniversary of the victory of the united army of the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania over the knights of the Teutonic Order, after which the Allies returned part of their territories captured by the Order. The monument was created at the expense of the pianist and public figure Ignacy Paderevsky, who attracted his fellow sculptor Anthony Vivulsky to work.
In the center of the memorial rises an equestrian statue of the Polish king Vladislav II Jagiello. Below is a sculpture of his Lithuanian ally, Grand Duke Vytautas, leaning on a sword. At the feet of Vitovt, the defeated figure of the leader of the Teutonic Order is stretched out, and soldiers of the allied army are depicted on the left and right. On a massive granite pedestal, the words are engraved: "Ancestors to glory - brothers to encouragement." Every year, on July 15, a reconstruction of the battle is held at the monument, in which lovers of medieval history from different European countries take part.
