Prison Island

Prison Island, Koh Chang
Tanzania, Zanzibar_city
One of the most interesting places in Zanzibar is the island of Chang or the island of Prison (Prison - prison). This name was not accidental. Many years ago, a British general built a prison on this island, but it was never used for its intended purpose. Before the arrival of the British, Zanzibar was ruled by the Arabs. The Arab slave owners used the island to keep their slaves until they could find further buyers for them. So the name Prison stuck to the island.
Nowadays, the island is famous for its snow-white beaches, rich underwater world, as well as giant tortoises living here. There are individuals of turtles that have reached the age of more than 100 years.
In 1919, the governor of the Seychelles presented several huge Aldabra tortoises. The animals multiplied rapidly, and already in 1955 there were 200 of them. However, the locals used turtles for food and for sale, therefore, by the 90s of the last century, there were about 20 Aldabra.

Realizing that you need to sail to the island by boat, for the sake of safety, we decided to buy an excursion from our guide. It was necessary to get into the boat from the sea, without a pier, it was very inconvenient, knee-deep in water - they got in! )))) We sailed for about 30 minutes. Here it is an island, there is a pier, but lo and behold! - again the guide said to jump straight into the sea ( Beautiful view, nature, silence, not very many tourists, we were met by local "prisoners" animals, because this is a former prison) Peacocks sometimes call, importantly walking very close) Tiny, shy roe deer, sometimes they allow you to photograph them.

Prison Island is worth a trip for the turtles. They are really huge, each has an age written on the shell, many are over 100 years old. The island is small, there are few people. There is a line of clean beach for those who want to swim. You can get to the island by boat, having agreed directly with local fishermen. The journey will take half an hour one way.
