Assumption Cathedral
Assumption Cathedral
Ukraine, Chernivtsi
The Assumption Cathedral in the village of Belaya Krinitsa was built in 1908 as the main temple of the Old Believer metropolis, at the expense of a couple of Old Believers, to perpetuate the memory of their son who died early. The five-domed temple was built in the Art Nouveau style; a four-tiered bell tower with a hipped roof was erected above the main entrance. In Soviet times, wheat and fertilizers were stored in the cellars of the cathedral, the monastery Pokrovsky Cathedral with a bell tower and St. Nicholas Church were destroyed. The wooden Kosmodemyanskaya church of the 18th-19th centuries in the Ukrainian style has been preserved. The interior of the cathedral is represented by one large and two small carved oak iconostases by carvers from Vladimir and painters from Palekh. In 2001, the temple was returned to the Belokrinitsky convent of the Old Believers - Lipovans.
