Intercession Cathedral

Cathedral of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin
Ukraine, Kharkiv
The Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos is a parish Orthodox church in Kharkov, the Kharkov diocese of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, in the name of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos. The stone building of the Pokrovsky Cathedral was built by the Cossacks outside the then borders of the fortress, near its northern wall, in 1689 - to replace the wooden Intercession Church (known since 1659). In the same 1689, the church was consecrated by Metropolitan Abraham.
Intercession Cathedral is a valuable monument of Ukrainian architecture of the second half of the 17th century. This is a baroque three-domed ("three-bath") church, set on a warm winter church, characteristic of Russian church architecture. The upper, cold church is surrounded by a gallery - "fear" and was united by a "gully" with a hipped bell tower. Patterned brick architraves coexist with multi-profile cornices with a small extension, a belt of rectangular depressions is complemented by images of the sun. The harmony of volumes growing out of each other, easily ascending, is adjacent to the harsh, heavy forms of the bell tower, reminiscent of a fortress tower.
In 1726, on the initiative of the Bishop of Belgorod, Epiphanius Tikhorsky, and the Governor-General of Sloboda Ukraine, Prince M. M. Golitsyn, the Holy Intercession Monastery for Men was established with the Kharkov Collegium, the first institution of higher education on the Left Bank.

At the same time, since 1729, the Church of the Intercession became a monastery and a collegium. The temple was repaired, decorated and provided with church utensils.

In 1732, a bell weighing 1.6 tons was installed on the bell tower. In 1799-1846 the Intercession Cathedral was the cathedral church of Kharkov. During the 19th and early 20th centuries, work was carried out in the church to decorate, repair and improve it.

In the 1920s the cathedral was closed and soon began to collapse. In the 1950s, an attempt was made to renovate it. In 1992, the temple, together with the architectural complex of the Holy Intercession Monastery, was returned to the Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
