Aleshkovsky Sands

Oleshky Sands, Oleshky Pisky
Ukraine, Kherson
Aleshkovsky Sands is the largest sandy massif in Europe, located 30 km east of Kherson between the villages of Radensk, Proletarka, Cossack Camps, Novaya Mayachka, consisting of dunes up to 5 meters high covered with rare vegetation. The Aleshkovskaya semi-desert was formed due to the uncontrolled grazing of herds of sheep in the 19th century, which completely destroyed all the grass to the very sands, due to deforestation, and wind erosion contributed to the spread of sands over a large area. In order to contain the spread of sands to the entire Black Sea region, the semi-desert at the beginning of the 20th century began to be fenced with an artificial forest consisting of pines, acacias, birches and other trees.
In Soviet times, part of the semi-desert was equipped for a military aviation training ground. Landmarks for the pilots were 200-meter crosses made of rubber tires. Near the village of Proletarka, there is an observation deck with a wooden gazebo on a hill, where a wooden staircase leads. Most of the desert is visible from the observation deck. In 2010, the Aleshkinskaya semi-desert became part of the Oleshkovsky Sands National Natural Park.

On our way home from the sea, we specially laid out our route in such a way as to call in the largest desert in Ukraine, and the second largest desert in Europe. It was not difficult to find it, but the clay road that led to the observation deck 3 kilometers from the village of Proletarka (now Chelburda) was searched for about 15 minutes, because there were no signs and pointers on the road at all. When we got to the desert, we found that the sand there is very similar to the sand of the Sahara desert in Africa.
