In Kyiv, at 9 Institutska Street, there is a majestic, monumental building of the National Bank of Ukraine, which impresses with its beauty and sophistication. Construction began in the fall of 1902 on the project of Kiev architect Alexander Kobelev, who won the competition, and according to the sketches of Alexander Verbytsky designed the facade of the bank building. Kyiv received a beautiful two-storey building with basements and basements, built with the latest technical equipment. A rosary was specially planted in the yard of the bank, the aroma of roses wafted on all floors, getting there through the air intakes. Italian sculptor Elio Salia was commissioned to line the building with artificial stone (made of gray granite and pink sandstone) and to decorate the interior.
The Kyiv office of the State Bank began its work in the new building three years later, and a year later it was solemnly consecrated. Under Soviet rule, the most famous building in the Kyiv office of the State Bank housed the Ukrainian Republican Office of the USSR State Bank (which was renamed the National Bank of Ukraine after the collapse of the USSR) and the City Office of the USSR State Bank.

During the reconstruction in 1934, two floors were added to the building. The superstructure project was developed by Kobelev in co-authorship with Rykov. The roof had to be lifted with powerful jacks (it was made of metal and due to its very heavy weight it had to be cut into pieces) and the floors were added gradually, thanks to which griffins were preserved. The work was performed at a highly professional level, so the bank building not only did not deteriorate its appearance, but became even more solid.
The coats of arms of Kyiv, Podil and Volyn provinces are still preserved here, the coat of arms of Kyiv depicts Archangel Michael with a raised sword.

The facade of the building of the National Bank of Ukraine is made in the style of the early Florentine revival and northern Italian Gothic. The decoration of the facade is twisted marble columns and decorative turrets on the corners of the building, which support the sculptures of huge griffins (griffins in ancient mythology were considered the guardians of gold deposits). Under each window and on the corners of the balconies are images of lions, which are a symbol of power, which corresponds to the status of the main financial body of the country. The facade of the building depicts the emblems of industry, transport, trade, agriculture. The interior of the building captures, especially the operating room, a lot of carvings, exquisite stucco, and colorful stained glass in the window openings give solemnity.
The decoration of the hall is sculptural compositions of the ancient gods Hephaestus, Demeter, Hermes, Athena Pallas, and in the center of the ceiling of the main operating room the image of the archstrategist Michael, the patron saint of Kiev.

The building of the National Bank of Ukraine is one of the most famous architectural monuments of Kyiv, built in the 20th century.
