Cape Chauda

Cape Chavda
Crimea, Feodosiya
The eastern outskirts of the Feodosia Gulf - Cape Chauda - is a geological monument of nature. Protected by law since 1964.

This is a low (15-30 m), flat section of the Kerch coast with steep banks. Large slabs of shell rock, naturally cemented into solid rock, successfully resist the erosion of sea waves.

In the sands and shell rocks of the ancient marine terrace of Cape Chauda, lying 20 m above sea level, one can see numerous fossilized shells of mollusks of the Chaudinsky Sea: zebra mussels, cockles, etc. This is a unique outcrop in Ukraine, where marine sediments with fossil fauna of the Chaudinsky sea basin were found. The entire basin was named after the only location of marine sediments of this era in Ukraine.

The desalinated Chaudin Sea existed on the site of the current Black Sea more than a million years ago. The Chaudin Sea was connected along the Manych Strait with the Caspian, and in the south, apparently, with the Sea of Marmara.
Cape Chauda is also interesting with the coordinates of geographic latitude: 45 degrees 00 minutes. It is through this point that the middle of the northern hemisphere of the earth lies, from here exactly 5,000 km to the equator and to the north pole.

In the vicinity of Chauda, there is the largest population in Europe of the two-flowered tulip listed in the Red Book of Ukraine. Local residents come here for the Chaudinsky mushroom growing only on the territory of the cape. They say that Catherine II brought it here - here it was grown for serving to the imperial table.

Near Cape Chauda, archaeologists excavated the ancient settlement of Kazek. But people settled here much earlier: in the area between 8 and 9 km to the north-east of the village of Primorsky, in the Chernaya Balka tract, four sites of an ancient person dated to the Mesolithic - Neolithic (10-6 thousand years BC) were recorded. .
Salt lake Kachik, located not far from the cape, is separated from the sea by a sandy embankment. On the cape itself, the Chaudinsky lighthouse and the fossil Chaudinsky oyster bank, wonderful sandy beaches and Cosmonauts Bay, where the first Soviet descent vehicles were tested to return astronauts to Earth, are of interest.

Now there is a large military training ground on Chaud. You can get to the cape only with passes: with the permission of the military leadership or for hunting under a license. The administration of the Chaudinsky hunting economy is located in the regional center of Lenino.
