During the defense of Sevastopol at the entrance to the North Bay in 1854 and 1855. Russian sailing ships were flooded "to block the entrance of enemy ships to the roadstead and thereby save Sevastopol" (P.S. Nakhimov). In memory of this, according to the project of the sculptor Adamson, the architect Feldman and the engineer Enberg, in 1905, a monument was erected near the former Nikolaev battery. On the underwater base, a square platform with a side of 9 m was placed, on which a plinth was arranged. An octahedral pedestal grows out of its raw granite blocks, where a slender Corinthian column rises, crowned with a bronze statue of an eagle with outstretched wings and a wreath of Glory. The height of the monument is 16.6 m.

The symbol of the city
Beautiful embankment. Nice port. You can feed the pigeons or just sit on a bench admiring the beautiful view. Clean and comfortable. Be sure to visit when you are in Sevastopol.→

Symbol of Sevastopol
This is a symbol of the Hero City, a symbol of courage and bravery of Sevastopol residents. And although the order to sink the ships in the bay was not heroic and was not entirely correct, but what the City and its inhabitants experienced during the two Defenses is worthy of respect and admiration.→
