We were in the Carpathians several times with a very active child. The little one climbed the blackberry bushes at the edge of the forest every morning, they did not see vipers and were not afraid.
There are vipers everywhere, both in the Carpathians and in the Kiev region, so there is nothing to be afraid of. While picking mushrooms in the forest near Kiev, we met them a couple of times, but this does not mean that we should stop going to the forest)))
Do not worry and go calmly, the only thing is that you should not walk through the forest in sandals, it is better to have sneakers - the common viper will not bite through them, and they protect the child’s leg up to the ankle. Well, she doesn’t bite high, she’s not a cobra and she doesn’t do a fighting stance)))

Vipers are everywhere in the Carpathians. And now too. We are there almost every weekend because we have our own house in the mountains. But vipers tend to crawl away on their own when they hear the slightest noise. The only thing: during a strong heat, they often crawl out onto the stones to bask and have a sleepy reaction. Therefore, they do not always have time to crawl away faster. Follow the safety rules: do not climb into blackberry-raspberry-thickets, without first rustling with a stick there; go to the forest only in rubber boots, even in the heat (especially if you plan to walk not just along a civilized path, but climb into the mountains); look around - vipers often like to be on the side of the paths

The area of distribution of vipers captures the whole of Ukraine. If you look at the number, then there are more vipers in Polissya. Most of them are in wet swampy places such as the Zhytomyr region, the north of the Kiev region, the west of the Chernihiv region, and there are a lot of them near any swamp of the reservoir. There are fewer of them in the Carpathians.
So the rules for visiting forests in the Carpathians are the same as for any forest anywhere in Ukraine. Walking in rubber boots in the heat is too much.

kolyan_cat. you say encyclopedic summaries, and I tell you how it is in real life in the Carpathians. If you lived in the foothills and mountainous areas, then you would know the safety rules from childhood. Not a single inhabitant of a mountain village will go to the forest for mushrooms or berries without rubber boots. Even in the heat. And yes, there are vipers - the last time I saw them was exactly 5 days ago. Nobody touches, but they are even near houses

Yes. In addition to vipers, there are also copperheads, which are also poisonous. In the mountains (if we consider hiking in the mountains) there are completely different safety rules than a walk through the forest in the Kiev region

Myst inhabitants in boots always go there even without vipers, because it is cheap and cheerful.
For a Ukrainian, it is more likely to run into a viper on vacation on the Teterev or Desna rivers than in the Carpathians. Most of the vipers I saw in the swampy area in the Chernobyl zone, more than a dozen per day. In the Carpathians for several years in a row I spend a week, in the forests, and for all the time I have never seen.
The viper feeds on small living creatures, which in turn live mainly in wet swampy places. There are few such places in the Carpathians, we have plenty. Ked there for a child is enough.

kolyan_cat, arguing with you is just stupid. Wear sneakers to the mountains and think that the locals are so poor and uneducated that boots are just cheap and cheerful for them. You just come to the Carpathians for a week, and we live nearby.

There are vipers on Synevyr. And not only there. There are many in Skhidnitsa this year, in the Svalyavsky district. I can only join the advice of musja7. Boots are required, in the grass and bushes, first rustle with a stick, then step.

Vipers are everywhere on the territory of Ukraine. But if you want to walk around in boots in the Carpathians - please. You can also take serum, an artificial respirator and a stretcher with you just in case.

Not funny and not smart, sorry.

Haven't heard of normal trekking shoes, have they? In the mountains in rubber boots, this is not right, in addition to being insanely hot, unbearably hot, kick-ass hot. So slippery too. Even in dry weather, and in the rain it is terribly slippery. I almost never saw in the mountains in rubber bands, all sorts of kirzach came across the villagers. I even looked at the pictures))) By the way, you should not be equal to the locals at all. They don’t understand tourists at all) They walk their own trails, more convenient for them, shorter to the goal - blueberries, grazing, cutting down, etc. and almost never use special marked tourist routes that are marked according to other principles - difficulty levels, length, peak coverage , beautiful views. They have their needs, the tourists have theirs. Hiking shoes should be comfortable, especially for walking. It is much more real to slip in shoes that are absolutely (!!!) unsuitable for this than to meet a viper.

But it’s very civilized on Synevyr, the paths are there, the crowd of people and, in fact, if you don’t climb Lake Mountain, it’s almost a plain there))) And for many years of hiking in the Carpathians, I, not even like that, our group, met a viper / copperhead only a few once. In the Chernihiv region, more often for sure, but there were more, and I also don’t look at snakes much, perhaps somewhere I confused it with someone else. In any case, the child is small and rubber boots will not help him at all when meeting (God forbid) with a viper.

Rustling with a stick, stomping loudly (they sense vibrations), look around in sunny clearings, bastards crawl out to bask, do not rush much, look around, do not drag a child into the jungle ... Such ... Boots are very doubtful. By the way, I picked mushrooms in May in the heat in boots just at the dacha, I almost died, really. The legs were like boiled, swollen and there was a mark on the legs from the edge of the boot. Then I was on an alloy, burned down and have gorgeous stripes from boots in the form of stripes for the whole season))) Beauty) I could not pass by, sore.
Pachok, here I am answering the greeting in my question about Portugal))) Yes, it's nice that you remember) Yes, I don't come often. She went to the mountains, to cottages, to gardening. I still travel, but I don’t have enough time for all the forums and now I’m more on the garden forums)))
