Las Murallas de Avila, Walls of Ávila

The medieval fortress wall is the symbol of Ávila. It encircles the old city and surrounds it along a length of 2.5 km. The wall was built by order of King Alfonso VI in the 11th century. on the site of Roman and Arab fortifications. The wall forms a rectangle, and along it there are 88 towers and 9 city gates. Its average height is 12 m, and its thickness is 3 m. During its history, the wall has been restored several times. The eastern section of the wall is the most interesting for viewing, there are the Cathedral of Avila, the Alcazar Gate and the Gate of St. Vincent with 20-meter towers. From the top of Avila's ramparts, you can see a magnificent panorama of the city and its surroundings.

A huge fortress wall surrounds the Spanish city of Avila from all sides. It seems that such a fortification was supposed to make the city truly impregnable for enemy troops. It is very interesting to admire the view of the city from the surrounding hills in order to capture the full scale of this 2.5-kilometer structure, as well as walk along the historical streets of the city inside the fortress wall. You can also climb one of the towers and walk along the wall itself, imagining yourself as a medieval sentinel, keeping order in the city and beyond its walls.

Avila is notable for its unique fortress wall. It was built under the leadership of de Borgogna under Alfonso VI, when the Christians returned to the city. Construction continued from 1085 to 1090. Earlier on this place there were fortifications of the Romans, then the Arabs. A two-kilometer wall encircles the Old City, it has 88 towers and 9 fortress gates. Adjacent to the wall are the Alcazar and the Cathedral, which are among the defensive structures of the fortress. This is one of the few completely preserved fortress walls.
