Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Greece, Athens
The foundation of the temple was laid in 1842. It is symbolic that the marble of seventy-two ruined churches of Athens was used for its construction. The authors of the project were four architects at once. The cathedral was built in several stages. The lighting of the religious building took place in 1862 in the presence of the royal family of Greece. Within its walls are kept the relics of Greek saints - Martyr Philothea of Athens and Patriarch Gregory V of Constantinople, martyred by the Ottoman Turks. It is also worth noting that next to the Cathedral of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin there is a small church of St. Eleutherius, built during the Ottoman period.

The cathedral was consecrated on May 21.1862 in honor of the Annunciation of the Mother of God in the presence of the King and Queen of Greece. This is a very beautiful cathedral in the center of Athens in the Monastiraki area. It was under restoration for a long time, but now you can admire it. From the outside, it looks more like a Catholic church, but inside it is a typical Orthodox church with rich icons and decorations. Two statues are installed on the square in front of the cathedral: St. Constantine XI Dragash and Archbishop Damascus.
