Monastiraki
Greece, Athens
Monastiraki, one of the central districts of Athens, next to Plaka and the Athenian Agora, has now almost completely absorbed the old district of Abadzidikou. Monastiraki is best known for its flea market. The name of the district comes from the word "monastery".

A church has been preserved here, which stands at the Ermou crossroads. In the 19th century, it was Catholic and belonged to the Frenchman Nikolaos Bonefatzis. In the 20th century, it was again returned to the bosom of the Greek Orthodox Church and now bears the name of the Church of the Most Holy Theotokos.

Near the exit of the Monastiraki metro station, there is an ancient mosque built in 1759 by the Turkish governor Tsistaraki. The Athenians blamed this mosque for the outbreak of famine in the cities. They considered it a cursed place, since the Ottomans blew up the Temple of Olympian Zeus to build a mosque and used its marble not even as a building material, but converted it into lime for plastering. After the Greek Revolution, various meetings of city authorities were held here. 1924 the building was transferred to the National Museum of Ceramics.
The Monastiraki Market on Ifest Street attracts thousands of tourists. Here you can buy souvenirs from Greece at the lowest prices in Athens. It also sells antique furniture, coins and other antiques. The market is open from 7 am to 7 pm, which is absolutely atypical for Greek markets and shops.
