Shargorod synagogue
Sharhorod Synagogue
Ukraine, Sharhorod
The synagogue in Shargorod, built in 1589 in the Moorish style with Renaissance and Baroque elements, is the oldest in Ukraine. Built of stone, with walls two meters thick, with watch towers, the synagogue was at the same time part of the defensive structures of the city and a place for prayers. In 1672-1699, during the period of Turkish rule, the building was used as a mosque, after the return of the territory of the Commonwealth, it again became a synagogue. In 1930, the synagogue was closed, the building was given to a juice-and-mortar plant. Now the synagogue has been returned to the use of the Jewish community of Shargorod.
