(Giovanni Giuliani).

I find it hard to imagine that there is anyone in the world who has never heard of Napoleon Bonaparte and his most successful battle at Austrelitz, which took place on December 2.1805. Therefore, the question of whether it is worth visiting the palace where the victory over the combined coalition of the Russian and Austrian empires was proclaimed and signed did not even arise.
Therefore, the travel route (by car) was planned from Uzhhorod through Slovakia with a visit to the thermal waters in the town of Vrbov and in the town of Rajecké Teplice. Then through the town of Trenč í n to Slavkov-u-Brna and further to Brno.
The first written mentions of this place date back to the beginning of the 13th century, when these lands belonged to the Teutonic Order. The settlement and the first fortress were called Austerlitz. And the name Slavkov is mentioned already in the second half of the 14th century.
From the first fortress-castle, lancet windows have been preserved (visible on the ramparts on the northern side of the palace), later in that part there was a “black” kitchen.
At the beginning of the 16th century, the fortress passed to new owners - the noble family of Kaunitz. They rebuilt the fortress into a palace in the Baroque style. The exact date of the reconstruction has not been preserved, only sketches of the construction plan have remained. At that time, the palace consisted of four buildings, an arcade and a square tower. At the end of the seventeenth century, the owners began rebuilding the palace according to the design of the priest and architect Domenico Martinelli in the late Baroque style, which we see today. When the family of the princes Kaunitz broke in, the palace became the property of the Palfi family. And after the Second World War, it became the property of the state.
The tour begins with the Hall of Founders of the Slavkov Palace. In my opinion, the most interesting exhibit in this hall is the genealogy of the Kaunits family, dating back to the second half of the 18th century. This is a pen drawing on a finely tanned astragalus (a plant of the legume family)
It is worth noting the marble bust of the founder of the Slavkov Castle, Dominik Ondř ej Kaunitz (Author Jan Blommendael, 1698). And the portrait of Vá clav Antoní n Kaunitz, Chancellor of Maria Theresa.
In the bathroom, the watercolors on the wall (dated to the mid-19th century) that separate the passage and the bathroom itself immediately catch your eye. The wall mirror in a marble frame and the painted lithographs depicting bathing nymphs also date from this period. Behind a wooden partition is a model of the bathroom equipment - the furniture dates from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The porcelain with a blue floral pattern was produced by the Viennese and Meissen porcelain factories as early as the second half of the 19th century. The porcelain was transferred to the collection after the death of the penultimate owner of the castle, Doctor of Law Vá clav Kaunitz.
The ceiling fresco depicts a man who, with gestures, emphasizes the need to remain silent about what was seen in the bathroom.
Next we pass to the small gallery of the Moravian and Bohemian branch of the Kaunits family.
Dominik Ondř ej Kaunits (painting near the stove), whose bust was in the first hall, was not only a patron and patron of art, but also took care of the economic prosperity of his estate. During his many years as the imperial vice-chancellor, he gained considerable experience in the economy and management of Western European countries. He planned to improve his financial situation with the help of a textile factory, starting the production of fine fabrics, which had previously been imported from abroad. He planned to open a fine cloth factory in Slavkov. Therefore, he submitted a request for a monopoly on the production of cloth in Moravia to the Viennese court, but during the negotiations Dominik Ondř ej dies in Vienna (1705), and his son Maximilian Oldř ich (painting opposite the window) continues the business. We see Maximilian Oldř ich here in a brocade robe embroidered with gold, in the rank of Moravian governor (zemsky hetman).
The eldest son of Dominik Ondř ej and brother of Maximilian Oldř ich was Franciszek Karel Kaunic (pictured near the bathroom door). Franciszek Karel chose the spiritual path. The author of the portrait, the Florentine artist Benedetto Luti, depicted him in the rank of Bishop of Ljubljana.
Ernest Christoph (Arnoš t Krš tof) (pictured next to Franciszek Karl), son of Vá clav Antonin and grandson of Maximilian Oldř ich, was the next prominent representative of the Kaunic family. He was on the imperial court council and worked as a diplomat in Naples and Rome. Like most of his famous ancestors, Ernest Christoph was a knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece. He was also an advisor and close friend of the young Joseph II. During his time, a new family tomb was being built under the Slavkov hospital church /1795/. His father, wife and himself are buried here. The founder of the Moravian branch of the Kaunice family is Leo Willem (portrait on the left by Ernest Christoph).
The remaining portraits depict representatives of the Czech Kaunice family - Rudolf and Jan Willem Kaunicki (from Kounice).
Very interesting arrangement of the stove. It was heated from the other side of the room, so as not to disturb the masters. Water with aromatic oils was poured into a special vessel so that the air in the room smelled good.
The ceiling fresco depicts the ancient goddesses of the morning dawn Eos and the moon Selene - the dawning morning drives away darkness and sleep. Eos was the sister of the sun god Helios. Every morning she rises from the ocean and rides in a chariot drawn by a pair of winged horses, heralding the arrival of her brother Helios. The morning star greets her, while the other stars fade away.
An interesting image of a little angel sitting on a cornice, due to the illusion a three-dimensional image is created, which appears to be a sculpture.
The next hall is the Habsburg-Lorraine dynasty. Vá clav Antonin Kaunitz was chancellor under four emperors: Maria Theresa, Joseph II, and until the end of his life under Leopold II and Franz II. As a reward for his lifelong service, Joseph II presented Vá clav Antonin Kaunitz with the portraits of the imperial family that are in this hall.
These are copies of pastels made from works by the Swiss artist Jean-É tienne Lyotard around the 1860s. Near the stove are portraits of Empress Maria Theresa and her husband Franz Stephen of Lorraine.
Portraits of Dominik Ondř ej Kaunitz (1692) and his son Maximilian Oldř ich (1698) are placed on the other side of the window. These portraits were created by the famous French portraitist Hyacinth Rigaud, who was the court painter of Louis XIV.
An exceptional example of the skill of a cabinetmaker is a Rococo-style secretary inlaid with four types of wood: walnut, ash, root veneer and mahogany. It consists of three parts, the middle one was used as a writing desk. Several secret drawers served to store important secret papers. This secretary is one of the most valuable pieces of furniture in the Slavkov Castle, it was made in the middle of the 18th century.
The rest of the furniture dates from the same period. The gilded clock, which still works, is made in the style of Louis XVI.

The ceiling fresco has a similar plot to the previous room. In addition to Eos and Selene, there is also the goddess of love Venus.
And then we get to the central hall of the western wing of the castle, which is now called the hall of the ancestors. Previously, there was a dining room here.

This hall arose on the initiative of Vá clav Antoní n Kauní c in the 1860s. At the same time, he ordered a portrait of his father - Maximilian Oldř ich and grandfather - Dominik Ondř ej Kauní c, the founder of the castle. These portraits were painted on the basis of older portraits that had survived at that time. And according to the traditions of that time, portraits of the wives of all the castle founders were also painted.

Dominik Ondř ej Kaunitz (1654-1705) in the portrait near the door to the hall was a diplomat and politician. He was born in Slavkov Castle. At the age of ten, he went to study in Brno, in the Jesuit order, and then in Olomouc. To get a place at court, he traveled throughout Western and Southern Europe to get to know the world and himself. He later married Maria Eleonora, Countess of Sternberg (d. 1706), depicted in the portrait opposite. Not only the bride's beauty played a significant role in the marriage, but also the fact that she came from a noble Czech family, and her father was vice-chancellor of the Czech court chancellery.
Maximilian Oldř ich Kaunitz (1679-1746), depicted in the portrait opposite the window on the right side of the door to the Historical Hall (next on the tour), became the heir to his father's estate after his older brother, Franciszek Karel, decided to become a priest. He was also sent on a journey to "discover the world" in southern and western Europe, where he met the young, then thirteen-year-old Maria Ernestina von Rietberg from East Friesland (the Netherlands) (portrait on the left of the door). Her dress was embroidered with silver threads and weighed almost 20 kg.
Vaclav Antonin Kaunitz-Ritberg (1711-1794) in the portrait opposite his father (Maximilian Oldř ich) is considered the most famous representative of the Kaunitz family. After a long journey and gaining some life experience, he becomes an imperial court advisor. He acquired the necessary knowledge at the University of Leipzig, which at that time had the reputation of being the best university in Germany. The curriculum also included rhetoric, music, dancing, horse riding, etc. In 1736, Vaclav Antonin married Maria Ernestina Franziska, Countess of Staremberg. At first, he served as ambassador in Turin. Maria Theresa highly valued his service, so she appointed Kaunitz as the Hofmeister (chief administrator of the royal court) of her sister Maria Anna, and after her death, as her chancellor. Kaunitz quickly recognized that it was necessary to reassess the attitude of the Habsburg monarchy towards France, at that time the strongest power. In an alliance with France, he saw the only possibility of protection against aggression from the Prussian king. Wenceslas Antonin was the same person who stimulated the orientation of the Habsburg monarchy towards France. To strengthen this alliance, he arranged the marriage between Maria Theresa's daughter Marie Antoinette and Louis XVI. Wenceslas Antonin was the first of his family to receive the title of prince (1764).

And finally we see the famous balcony from which the French Emperor Napoleon (December 3.1805) delivered a victory speech after the battle that went down in European history as the Battle of Austerlitz.
On the gilded tables in the Baroque style stand two sketches of the sculptural groups of Jupiter and Cupid and Cupid with Psyche. These are the works of Giovanni Giuliani, and the statues themselves are located in the castle park. The beautiful composition on the ceiling depicts the gods on Olympus. The corner medallions depict the transformation of Zeus, the supreme ruler of gods and mortals. Zeus transformed himself, for example, into a swan, a bull, water, rain, to achieve the woman he liked.
In the next ceremonial hall, which is now called historical, the "peace" treaty was signed on December 6.1805, signed by Prince Johann of Liechtenstein on behalf of Austria (because both Emperors Franz and Alexander were still kicking their heels before the end of the battle), and on behalf of France - by Marshal Berthier.
The hall itself was painted by the Austrian artist Josef Pichler in 1767.
In two niches you can see Hercules, who in Greek mythology personifies strength and courage, fighting a lion in one and a raging bull in the other.
A special feature of this hall is its acoustics, which was already a requirement during construction. This hall was used for secret diplomatic negotiations by Chancellor Vaclav Antonin. The participants in the negotiations spoke to each other so quietly that nothing could be heard from the door. When talking loudly, an echo occurs here, voices double, and the conversation cannot be understood not only behind the door, but also in the hall itself.
The impression of the entire hall is enhanced by the large Baroque chandeliers made of Czech crystal, which still retain their authenticity and have not been converted to electric ones.
Above the door is a bronze bust of Chancellor Vá clav Antoní n Kaunitz.
This beautiful hall has not frozen in time, now it is used for concerts, exhibitions, and you can also hold a wedding ceremony here.
The next room is called Boulle (Boul) because the furniture in this room is made in the style of André Charles Boulle (a famous French master furniture maker).
The basis of this furniture is ebony wood, inlaid with tortoise shell and gilded bronze.
This entire set is from the office of Dr. Vaclav Kaunitz, the penultimate owner of the Slawkó w Castle. The painting "The Roman Bride" by the Venetian artist Andrea Celesti is noteworthy. The painting depicts the preparation of a young girl for the wedding ritual.
About the bed that is located here, it is said that after the Battle of Austerlitz, Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte himself slept in it. But if we proceed from historical facts, Napoleon really spent the night in the castle of the nightingale. But he slept on his field, camping bed. During the restoration of the bed, it turned out that it consists of several different parts, dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries.
A gilded 4-part screen and a wall clock in the Louis XVI style of the late 18th century complement the design of this bedroom.
A mirror in a magnificent frame, decorated with carvings, dating from the 19th century. Both blue vases with ornamental medallions also date to the early 19th century.
They were made at the porcelain factory in Brzezó w. The painting by the window depicts Maria Eleonora Sternberska. The painting above the screen from the mid-18th century shows the family of Chancellor Vá clav Antoní n Kaunitz.
The ceiling depicts the ancient Greek gods: Aphrodite, Hera, Pallas Athena and, together with them, the god of time Chronos.
Next is the biblical salon. Two paintings opposite each other date from the end of the 17th century. These are works by Irhann Weiss. Near the window is "The Overthrow of the Idols", the second is called "The Finding of Moses". Above the prayer bench in the late Baroque style is depicted the Holy Evangelist John with his attributes - a pen and a scroll. The last painting in this room is Saint Mary Magdalene by Johann Liss. The ceiling depicts the Wheel of Fortune, that is, the personification of fate. The wheel represents the fickleness and inconstancy of happiness.
The women's salon is furnished in the style of the 19th century, mainly in the Biedermeier style. This was an art movement (approximately 1815-1848) of the German bourgeoisie, especially in household art, also called the bourgeois Empire style. In the room you can see an upholstered furniture set with a table, as well as a round sewing table, which stored everything necessary for sewing and embroidery. Both of these activities were a favorite pastime of women in the first half of the 19th century.
The oval painting in the Biedermeier style above the sofa depicts Countess Laudonova from nearby Zhdanitsy. The smaller paintings depict the Seidl couple and their relatives, who also lived in the Zhdanitsy estate. Clock paintings were characteristic of this style. The images on the clock depict gentlemen on horseback against the backdrop of an ideal landscape.
A typical element of a mid-19th century salon were “slides” of glazed cabinets, in which many precious little things were stored. Among the items in the slide, the so-called Rococo teapot doll in a blue dress is interesting. Another piece of furniture is a jewelry box from the same era, covered with root veneer. The large painting near the stove depicts the ancient god Zeus with Callisto. The richly decorated Venetian mirror from the mid-19th century attracts attention.
Hall of the Last Kaunics. The hall is dedicated to the penultimate owner of Slavkov Castle, Doctor of Law Vá clav Kaunic. Vá clav Robert Kaunic was raised by his mother, Eleonora Vorachycka of Pabenice, in the spirit of patriotism and love for the homeland. Eleonora Vorachycka was a great patriot of the Czech Republic. Thanks to his first marriage to the famous Czech actress Josefina Č ermakova, Vá clav Kaunic was well acquainted with Antoní n Dvoř á k (Czech composer and conductor). In his second marriage, Vá clav Kaunic married Josefina Horová , who was 33 years younger than him, out of great love. On the wedding day, May 12.1908, the newlyweds gave their palace in Brno on Ž erotynova Square to the students of Brno. The income from the house later created a fund for the construction of student dormitories in Brno. The portraits of the couple were painted by Kaunica's friend, Jan Skramlik, around 1910. The furniture in this room came from the Kaunicas' Prague apartment. Vá clav inherited it after the death of his mother, Eleonora Vorachycka from Pabenice. The furniture came to the castle after the death of Josefina Kaunica Horová in 1961.
Rubens Hall. At first, this was the castle's large art gallery, where works by various authors were kept. After the death of Albrecht Kaunitz (the elder brother of Dr. Vá clav Kaunitz), when his body was briefly exhibited in this hall for farewell, due to inattention to safety rules, the curtains caught fire from the flame of candles and a fire broke out. Several exhibited paintings were destroyed in the fire.
Today, in this room you can see paintings that are to some extent connected with its name. These are beautiful copies of paintings by one of the most famous artists, Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640). All the paintings depict dramatic hunting scenes. In one of them, hunters fight a wild boar, in another with hippopotamuses, and in the third they engage in battle with wild animals. The author of the existing stone statue (torso) is the sculptor Giovanni Giuliani.
Next we pass through the corridor to the chapel. Between the windows we can see a painting depicting St. Urban, which came here from the chapel of St. Urban above Slavkov. The most interesting thing in it is the oldest image of Slavkov in the lower part. The city here is still within the fortification walls. Only the western wing has been built in the castle, behind it a tower from an older building in the Renaissance style still rises. To the left of the castle you can see a Gothic building - the church of St. James the Elder (Zebedeev), which was destroyed in 1757. The tower of the city bell tower later gave way to the castle park, which was built in 1770. The last Southern Gate was destroyed in 1903.
Opposite hangs a work by the famous German artist Johann Heinrich Schö nfeld (1681), depicting the Holy Trinity. The artist continued the tradition of Caravaggio in his chiaroscuro technique.
Chapel. The castle chapel of the Holy Cross was founded during the final stage of the construction of Slavkov Castle during the time of Vá clav Antoní n Kaunitz. It completes the southern wing of the castle and covers all ground floors. The illusory decorative design was made in 1769 by the Austrian artist Josef Pichler, the same one who painted the Historical Hall. The wooden altar with monumental statues of angels was created by Franz Xavier Messerschmidt in 1774. On small tiles on the altar lie pieces of parchment with the text of the Gospel. The image in the left part of the male oratory shows the Flight of the Holy Family into Egypt. It was created by an unknown artist at the turn of the 17th and 18th centuries. The statues depict the Black Madonna (or Black Virgin - a mystical image of the Virgin Mary with a dark or black complexion, symbolizing mystery, sorrow or purification) and St. John of Nepomuk. In the right part of the oratory, we see in the display cases statues of saints from the 19th century, books on religious themes and small household censers (pa vessel for holy water, into which the censer is dipped). It is worth paying attention to the Gothic statues of Christ and St. Barbara. The image of the Madonna is attributed to the brush of the Italian artist Guido Reni, who was one of the best representatives of the Bolognese art school of the first half of the 17th century.

The tour lasts about an hour. On the official website you can find a schedule of tours of the castle (approximately every hour). The park is open to visitors for free. Unfortunately, the tours are in Czech, you can get a printout in English at the ticket office.
After the tour, if possible, I recommend visiting Slavkovský pivovar, even if you are not a beer connoisseur (or driving: )), have lunch and try their signature lemonade.
