A "good" start

There are 3 different railways from Gatwick Airport to London - one is more expensive than Gatwick Express, and two are cheaper - Southern and First Capital Connect (FCC). We bought tickets for the FCC, but managed to mix it up and land in Southern. But we got away with it. And we got caught on another... Somewhere after 15 minutes of the road, we noticed that the incoming passengers were ignoring our part of the car, and sitting down where it was more crowded. Looking around, we noticed that we sat down in seats with small marks on the "1st class" windows. Typically for Europe, there are no curbs and gates for passage to the first class. We really did not want to transfer bags... At the last station, our immediacy was punished by 20 pounds each. It turned out that there are controllers in England. For an illustration, see a photo of a poster from the London Underground.

Card for transport

This is a dream! One rechargeable Oyster Card for all modes of transport! Definitely, this should be your second purchase in England (after the train ticket from the airport). There is also a paper Travelcard, but in all respects it is worse - it is valid only for a day, it is limited by travel zones, it is not replenished, it is beneficial only from 3 trips a day and more, and unused money is not returned.

Sightseeing tour of London

Purpose of the sightseeing tour:

  • Inspiration for the next few days. Not to learn much, but to be inspired to tirelessly pass through the huge city over the next days with a constant feeling of "we don't even have time to see even half".
  • To hear and put into memory the necessary minimum of famous sights. Then, when laying a route between two "software" sights on the map, do not miss a dozen "optional" ones between them.
  • Don't get cold or get sick for the rest of the trip. It is convenient to look for guides on Turpravda or on Tripster.
  • What to visit. Our findings and mistakes

Visit Visitlondon. com. And even before the trip, so as not to waste time in London. We are not lovers of history and painting, so our list turned out to be:

  • Tate Modern Museum. Very impressed! And temporary exhibitions, and museum collections, and the museum building itself (a former power plant).
  • Victoria and Albert Design Museum. A huge museum, and it is not at all necessary to cover it in one day. Little by little, half an hour a day, your life is just enough to inspect it. It will be interesting here for children aged 10-60, who have not yet run out of creativity. The thing is that the museum demonstrates not only works of art, but also the process of their creation. And this is done in an interactive manner (on monitors with touchscreens), a physical manner (in the form of a set of semi-finished products of varying degrees of readiness) or a dynamic manner (when a real workshop is located behind the shelves with ceramics, in which a real master creates a real master piece).

  • British Museum. Everything that the British had plundered all over the world for centuries, they brought here. They still cannot disassemble and sort the loot - they only managed to shove it through the halls. You won't have enough life for this museum, so take a map, pull yourself together and take another look at the map. Try to pick 10-15 gyms that you can run that day. I looked at Clock, Money, Mummies and Cafe.
  • Design Museum near London Bridge. Don't go here, it's small and paid.
  • Emirates Air Line cable car. Not interesting in itself, passes over the trash cans, central London is not visible. It starts from the huge concert hall O2, which is also not interesting in itself. Perhaps if you combine these two sites with a concert at the O2 or a visit to the Docklands area. . .
  • Restaurants and food

  • Jamie Oliver's Barbecoa restaurant. Tasty, long, not expensive (a little more expensive than average).
  • You don't have to eat Chinese food or fast food. Go to pubs and taverns, after 8 pm they have a very colorful atmosphere. English crowds drink beer and talk loudly. You can see both women's and men's companies, and women also drink beer and shout emotionally loudly. At some tables, they can play Monopoly or collect figures from cubes. True, in the evenings it can be problematic to find a restaurant where the kitchen works.
  • Visit one of the M&S Organic Food Markets if you pass by. They sell a lot of interesting food products, ready-to-eat and raw, which do not exist at all in Russia or Ukraine.
  • Theatres, shows and clubs

Leicester Square is home to several box offices where you can buy tickets for any show in London. Ticket offices claim "official half price" (half price), but you can buy tickets on the Internet for the same price - we checked (but where will you print them? ) We liked the musical We will Rock You at the Dominion Theater, but not enthusiastic. Better go to Stomp, in New York it was amazing. Fabric is considered the main nightclub, but we did not get into it. But they were at the Koko club on Tottenham Road. The original interior of the former four-level theater, painted in red and gold colors. At the same time, there is no glamor either in the interior or in the visitors, which was very pleasing. In London clubs, it is mandatory to show your passport and be over 18.

    Shopping in London

  • Go to Westfield which is right next to Stratford station. Huge nothing here. Seems to be the biggest in London.
  • Go to Primark - great inexpensive clothes. There is a department in Westfield, and also saw a separate Primark store on Oxford street.
  • You shouldn't go to Harrods - this is a shopping center for Arabs who do not count money. And there are really a lot of Arabs there, with children, strollers, groups of 7 or more.
  • Mobile map of London for iPad

We used three at the same time:

  • Google. Maps for laying complex routes in advance (when there is access to wi-fi)
  • MapsWithMe is an offline map that works offline and conveniently displays objects. This map is easy to read. The free version does not search for objects by name.
  • CityMaps2Go is an offline map with feature search, but it's slow and very hard to read. Many Wiki articles are also available offline. The free version is limited to only 2 maps to download.
