We rested with my husband and daughter from August 4 to August 14.2012 in Agia Pelagia at the Nicolas Villas 3 * hotel. We took a ticket from Tez Tour, for which many thanks to our tour operator Albina! I liked everything very much.
The hotel we had was only 3 stars, room 206 Family room (two rooms), our room was included in the price right away, that is. at the reception we did not have to pay anything extra. The room was not settled immediately, we had to wait until they were released and cleaned. There is a toilet and shower in the room, by the way, take shampoo and shower gel with you, there is no hair dryer either. We had two small sofas in one room, designed for 1 person, a kitchen set with a sink, an electric stove and a mini fridge. We only used the refrigerator. The other room had an iron double bed, two bedside tables and a wardrobe with a safe. The safe is paid (for 11 days we paid 15 Euros), the key can be taken at the reception. Air conditioning is also paid 7 Euros per day, we took the remote control for one day, we used the whole vacation when we rented a room, no one said a word to us about the surcharge.

Their tea is really not the same as ours, it is poorly brewed and mostly herbal tea. The restaurant had a vending machine with drinks like Sprite, Cola, etc. , water was also present there. And the device with red and white semi-sweet wine from packages, in principle, is quite tolerable. Lunch and dinner are very similar, there is always one meat dish, it is fried or stewed pork, beef, chicken, rice, fried potatoes in the oven or french fries, vegetable stew, fresh vegetables, feta cheese (or rustic, as you like) , olives, yogurt, vegetable salads dressed with their sour cream, fruit melon, watermelon and grapes (very sweet and tasty). Some soup was also present at dinner (we had two types - pea and onion), of course it is difficult to call it a soup, rather a liquid hot stew. Most importantly, no one went hungry. If you went on an excursion and missed lunch, they approached the reception in advance and ordered a lunch box to go, and in the morning when they had breakfast, they took it away.
We never even swam in the pool of our hotel, the sea was enough to head. We hardly sat at the pool bar, we drank draft beer a couple of times, the beer was normal, it seemed to me that it was better than in Egypt. Nothing else was taken at the bar, so there is nothing to say. The hotel area is small, but quite cozy. In order not to interfere with sleep, we closed the windows and turned on the air conditioner. companies gathered at the pool bar and talked loudly, plus the music played quite loudly. The hotel staff does not know Russian, so at least a little knowledge of English is required. And in general, in Crete, no one knows the Russian language, but in principle, you can explain yourself with people and on your fingers, as they say. If you learn elementary phrases in Greek, such as thank you, please, good morning, etc. - then the attitude towards you will immediately change for the better. Well, and most importantly, behave in a friendly and cultural manner, then the same attitude will be towards you.
The beach was a 15-minute walk from the hotel, municipal, ie. everyone comes, there were always a lot of people. A sunbed costs 2 Euros and an umbrella is also 2 Euros, it was possible not to take a sunbed with an umbrella, many lay on towels and bedspreads. Also, many bought umbrellas (cost from 8 Euros). The beach is sandy, the entrance to the water is sandy and pebbly, we did without coral slippers. We took fins, snorkels and masks with us. We swam in them almost every day, we did not regret that we took them with us. The water is clear, cool, the color is so beautiful that it is difficult to describe, it must be seen! It was quite hot and sunny, in the morning at 9.30 in the shade it was +32, for me that's it! I love heat very much. For those who like it cooler, you need to come at the beginning of the season or at the end, but the water will be cooler accordingly.
A small bus runs from the hotel, which takes everyone to the beach and to the city, then takes them back, in the morning, at lunchtime and in the evening. The schedule is issued upon check-in at the hotel at the reception.
Luda, a woman who rents cars, came to the reception at a certain time. She is fluent in Russian, English and Greek. But we did not take a car from her, because. expensive. Although she said that only she has full insurance and she will give a map for free, she will show and tell where it is better to go, if necessary, she will give a navigator (5 Euros per day). We decided to walk around the streets and take a closer look. On the way to the beach there is a car rental, the owner is an aged man with gray hair and glasses, with a very pleasant smile. We spoke to him in English, he does not understand Russian at all. He offered us a Hyundai i10 on the mechanics, a 1.2l engine, this is quite enough, it pulls into the mountains, along serpentines, just a great car! Paid with a bank card. Full insurance, with a full tank of gas (it was also necessary to return the car with a full tank of gas). Took for 9 days for 265 Euros in total. He gave us 2 maps for free, marked on the map where to go. We were satisfied. Gasoline is very expensive 1.89 Euros, we filled up 2 times for 80 Euros in total.
To be honest, the holiday is aimed at those who can rent a car and explore the island on their own. There is nothing to do in the hotel, you can go crazy with boredom, there is no entertainment. Although who likes what.
We traveled only half of the island, leaving the rest for the next time. We liked it so much that we decided to return and definitely to Agia Pelagia. How many places have traveled, our beach is the best.
About excursions:

The territory is large in the mountains, there are a lot of interesting slides and there are several exciting ones, in general, just like in all water parks. We went there only because of the child, we did not regret it.
3) We sailed to the island by ferry - 20 Euros for each round trip. The last ferry departs at 12 noon, so you need to arrive early, departure every 20-30 minutes, a ticket was purchased on the ferry. The island has no infrastructure, a beach with umbrellas and sunbeds, also paid for 2 Euros apiece, we settled under a tree for free. Water and food are not sold there, we brought with us. Locals come there to rest with tents, food and refrigerators for several days. Very nice, took a lot of pictures. On one side of the island there are big waves, on the other side there is silence and grace. We swam a lot, collected shells, went back in the evening, we liked it very much.
4) We stopped by the church, built back in the 13th century, in which frescoes from those times have been preserved, the cost is 2.5 Euros per entrance. Located on the road to the village of Kritz, not far from Agios Nikolaus. Worth a look.
5) I also really liked the village of Kritsa, it is worth seeing how ordinary Greeks live, you can also buy souvenirs there, mostly there are a lot of tablecloths and napkins embroidered in the Greek style (handmade). In this village, we bought oil, we were advised to take it there, because. they sell factory oil there, accidentally came across a store where there was a sign in Russian and there were photos of certificates of this oil, so they took it there, it turned out to be very high quality, they already tried it at home.
6) We visited a monastery near a place called Preveli, where a chip from the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified is kept. The road runs through the Canyon of Courtallion, a rather narrow and difficult serpentine to this monastery. Entrance 5 Euro per person. On the territory there is a museum (I liked it very much). We bought icons there, by the way, there are personalized icons, the names are written in Russian; wrist bracelets, which consist of 250 knots, look like baubles. We were told that monks weave these bracelets, they read a prayer for each knot and say the name of a saint, so that you are guarded by 250 saints. Of course, maybe this is a scam for tourists, but we bought it (5 Euros apiece). In the temple itself there is a cross behind glass, at its base in a glass ball there is a chip from the cross.
