We rested in Rhodes at the end of the summer of 2006. I’ll say right away to those who choose a place to relax that you need to clearly understand how you want to relax. Rhodes is interesting because it stretches along two seas. One is always wavy, the other, on the contrary, is quiet and warm.
We chose the hotel, not particularly interested in just that. The hotel itself is very decent. They feed excellent. Territory well-groomed. The location is good. The sea is nearby, and when you get bored, there is where to walk along the shops. There is something to see.
But this is a hotel for surfers. Surfs are brought with them, and you can rent them right there. There would be only desire. There are a lot of elderly Germans and Dutchmen flying under sail. Therefore, sometimes it is difficult to swim, just make sure that it does not rush over your head.

But we got the greatest pleasure when we decided not to get involved with excursions, but took this matter into our own hands. Rent a car - just spit. They offer everything from a bicycle and an ATV to a truck. We took a cheaper Citroen C3 car (45 euros / day) for 3 days and began to comb the island. Those who have flown to Rhodes see the statue of Christ, but few people go there. But in vain. There is a Catholic monastery. There were no monks. Therefore, only tourists and peacocks walked through the empty territory. The statue of Christ stands on the very edge of the cliff. The dimensions are such that up to 10 tourists who have climbed the stairs inside the statue are placed on his shoulders. Impressive. The road leading to the statue is called "The Path to Calvary". On both sides of the road there are posts with copper pictures symbolizing the suffering of Jesus. It is interesting that it was in this place that Suleiman the Magnificent's headquarters was located when he stormed the fortress of Rhodes.
The fortress itself is a work of art. We were there 2 times and both times we left only when my wife's legs were no longer worn. Powerful walls, beautiful buildings. It is interesting to walk along the knight's street, look at the coats of arms of knightly orders. The first impression from the street is that the knights lived like novices of the monastery (narrow streets, windows). But we decided to look out the door. We entered one of the entrances and pushed the door into the yard. And there... a decent courtyard, garden, fountain, the same peacocks. In short, the knights only pretended to be ascetics. Good museum. There is a huge market inside the fortress. And European, and Arabic, and Jewish. It is good to arrive in Rhodes early in the morning, before the arrival of buses with tourists.
The port looks nice. So you can imagine how the Ear of Rhodes stood here.
The fortress is well preserved. Behind its walls it is quiet and peaceful. There are heaps of huge cannonballs with which Suleiman bombarded the knights so that they would get away to Malta. It is also interesting that marble plaques rise in two places of the fortress, on which it is written that thanks to the efforts of Mussolini, the Turks restored everything that they destroyed during the years of their ownership of the island.
For me, this was unexpected. Nice and unfinished Villa Mussolini, where you can go.
And how good are the squares and sidewalks, lined with pebbles. This is an art that the Greeks are good at. A small team sits, some sort the pebbles by size and color, others level the sand cushion, and the elder drives the pebbles upright, adhering to the pattern. And it turns out a wonderful picture. Here and dolphins, and octopuses, and whatever you want. There is no such number of squares laid out with pebbles anywhere else. In Crete, we saw them only in two places, and then they were small.

An hour away by car on a magnificent highway is the ancient Linos. This is a separate song. On the top of a high hill, around the ancient Greek temple of Aphrodite, on the shore of a beautiful bay, the knights built another fortress. The spectacle is impressive.
You sit on a donkey (5 euros) and you are taken up the narrow streets to the fortress. It becomes scary at the thought that you will hit the walls of houses. Do not worry. Donkeys are not people, they will not foolishly knock. When you go upstairs, do not forget to take a picture against the background of a fresco carved a thousand years before the birth of Christ in honor of a fellow countryman, winner of the Olympics of some century. Walk along the walls, look at the sea, admire the remains of an ancient Greek temple. And when you get tired of all this magnificence and the hot sun, go down to the sea and swim in the bay. That's when you will understand why sometimes it's not a sin to take a car and not be tied to a bus with its passengers scattered in different directions.
Get a ticket for the boat to Symi Island. Try to guess so that the ship is not crowded. Otherwise it's hard to find places. But you won't regret it.
I won't bore you. I can only say that after Rhodes we rested in Crete. heaven and earth. For the inquisitive, it's just boring. But you go around Rhodes and enjoy.
Where else will you see dump trucks filled to the top with grapes, like we have potatoes.
In short, for those who want a relaxing and interesting holiday in a relaxed environment - choose the islands of Greece. But of them the best is Rhodes.
Good luck and have a good rest.
