Provincial Norway

The next day, no less interesting program: on the way to Trondheim, we visited several small towns, each of which is interesting and unique in its own way. And one of these small, but, nevertheless, amazing cities is Å lesund, which is located on several islands at the mouth of the famous Geirangerfjord. Countless islands, fjords and the sea make this city especially attractive for tourists. Alesund, which means "eel" in Norwegian, got its name from the narrow winding strait that divides it into several parts. The city was rebuilt after a fire in 1904, having received a unique architectural unity in the Art Nouveau style. Today Å lesund is a modernist monument of international importance.

Another town worth mentioning...

The whole history of modern jazz is presented in the programs of the international festival "Molde Jazz", held since 1961 in Molde. The city is also famous for its observation deck, which offers panoramic views of 222 mountain peaks. It is also called the "City of Roses" for its abundance of lush gardens.

The most exciting route from Molde to Kristiansund runs along the Atlantic road. This highway passes through many islands and skerries, so sometimes it seems that the bus is sliding on the sea surface. It is built on 8 bridges, its length is 8.2 km. It should be noted that the road is the winner of 2005 in the nomination Technical feat of the century.

We drive into the port city of Kristiansund, but it does not only look like a working city. Numerous cafes invite you to relax and have fun. By the way, the first opera performance in Norway was staged not in Oslo, but in Kristiansund...

So we got to the city of Trondheim, famous for the largest Gothic cathedral in the North, Nidaros (XII century) with the tomb of St. Olaf. Kings were crowned there. The facade of the Nidaros Cathedral is richly decorated with sculptures, colored with amazing stained glass windows and in its splendor resembles Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. Here you can attend worship, listen to the organ.

You can also visit the Archbishop's Palace (XII century), see the royal mansion Stifgarden.

The next morning we continued our journey north. After driving along Lake Snasa in Grong, we visited the Salmon Aquarium. The aquarium itself disappointed us...The cost of this excursion is quite high, and from what we saw - a small aquarium with salmon. Similar ones are installed in almost every domestic supermarket. At the same time, those who wished had the opportunity to try a variety of fish dishes in the restaurant, which were to the liking of many.

And the surrounding nature was picturesque.

Northern Norway and the Arctic Circle

We are entering Northern Norway - the country of white nights and majestic landscapes. Ahead lies the crossing of the Kargan Mountains with a panoramic view of the Seven Sisters mountain range and crossing the majestic Svolvæ r Plateau.

Thanks to warm currents, the climate here is not as cold as one would expect from such northern latitudes, so the flora and fauna of these places is simply unique.

Beautiful landscapes along the Namsen River are replaced by an equally wonderful view of rapidly running mountain streams.

On the way, we get acquainted with the city of Mo-i-Rana, where we approach the monument to the rebellious prisoners of fascist concentration camps (this uprising is mentioned in A. Ivanov's book "Eternal Call").

Through the majestic Svolvaer plateau, our group rushed to 66 degrees. 33 min. parallels where the Arctic Circle passes.

The bus rises higher and higher into the mountains, nature changes dramatically: lush forests give way to undersized, twisted, sparsely growing birch trees. We get off the bus and fall under a heavy cold wind.

We visit the polar center, which houses a museum, a restaurant, a good shop, where stuffed polar animals are placed everywhere ...it seems that living representatives of the fauna are next to you.

On the territory of the center there is a monument to Soviet soldiers who took part in the liberation of Norway in 1945. A historical fact: the Norwegian king Haakon VII, who was in forced emigration in London, called on his people to assist the Soviet troops in every way in the fight against the German invaders.

Leaving the center, we head for the night in Bodø . The time is approaching midnight, and suddenly a bright sun peeps out ...So for the first time we understood what a polar day is! The night is no different from the day: light, sunny.

Lofoten is an archipelago of seven islands

Early in the morning we enter the ferry to the Lofoten Islands, which are an archipelago of seven islands. We sail for 4 hours in the Norwegian Sea, we sail through numerous rocky islands. Very close to us is the famous Salstraumen whirlpool, in which huge funnels 4-5 meters deep and reaching a speed of 40 km / h are formed every 6 hours.

Lofoten met us with a bright sun, relatively warm. Paradoxically, before the Arctic Circle the weather did not spoil us: it was overcast, it rained every day. But as soon as we crossed this invisible line, the weather improved: the sun shines bright day and night, the rains stopped, it got warmer, snow-capped mountains disappeared from the landscape. The average temperature in July is +13 degrees, in January -3 degrees, and in the south and in the center of the country frosts are -30 degrees in winter. From 3.

4% of the country's territory suitable for agriculture, 2% are in the north, that's the influence of the Gulf Stream (without it, normal life in these latitudes would be impossible).

So, we land on Lofoten...An archipelago of seven islands. Only one memory of the Lofoten Islands, and magical pictures appear before your eyes. People come here to see another Norway. In this kingdom of islands in the Vestfjord, green mountains rise vertically from the ocean, giving way to gently sloping shores and white sandy beaches. There is some extraordinary light here that colors nature and buildings in purple, gold, indigo, green and white, which constantly replace each other. Nature arranged her gallery of flowers and plants. Our journey from island to island is accompanied by a many-voiced choir of birds.

We visit the fishing villages of Hennngsvæ r, which is also called the "Norwegian Venice", and Reine, recognized as the most beautiful place in Norway. Here you can get acquainted with the drying process of the famous Norwegian cod.

The next object through which we continue our acquaintance with the islands is the Nofotr Viking Museum, where you can walk in the footsteps of the Viking leaders, put on their armor and imagine how their life was more than 1000 years ago. Near the museum there is a whole street with souvenir shops, cozy cafes. Having visited the capital of Lofoten - the city of Svolvaer, and having bought fish for a picnic there, we smoothly move over the bridge to the Vesterene Islands, continuing to admire the peculiar charm of these islands.

We stopped for the night in Harstad, where a delicious dinner was waiting for us. Also late in the evening it is interesting to make a night promenade around the city. The street is as bright as day, the sun is shining brightly.

Pleasantly surprised by the blooming lilac everywhere. For a walk, you can also use the bike, which are in the hotel lobby. Thus passed the first day, rich in impressions, spent in the Arctic...

On the road again in the morning. On the way to Tromsø we visit Narvik, the city of Norwegian glory. For him during the Second World War, fierce battles were fought with the fascist invaders. A monument and a tank at the entrance to the military museum remind of the former glory.

Our second stop also reminds us of World War II. Stopping at a fork in the road, we see a bright red house on a hill, a monument to a woman with a boy. On the memorial plaque there is an inscription with text in Norwegian and English, thanks to which we learn that King Haakon VII of Norway stayed in this house, who was forced to leave Norway in 1940 after the German invasion.

Tromso - a warm gateway to the Arctic Ocean

We drive along a beautiful road with fantastic views to Tromsø , called the "Paris of the North", one of the world's leading centers for environmental research. The ships of Nansen and Amundsen left Tromsø for Arctic expeditions, as we are reminded by the monuments to the legendary navigators and the Museum of the Conquest of the Arctic.

The city center is small and easy to get around on foot. The historical part includes the main street Storgata, as well as the streets Strandgata, Skippergata and Skansegata, which lie closer to the sea. The main market square, Stortorget, overlooks the harbor and the Arctic Cathedral across the strait. On the other side of the Storgata, houses climb steeply up a range of hills. These hills separate the eastern part of the city from the western part and from the airport. The space under the mountain is pitted with tunnels that hide traffic flows underground.

The world's northernmost university, the observatory, the Maka brewery, the botanical garden, the zoo, and interesting cultural sites such as the Hologaland Theater, one of the largest wooden churches in Norway, are located here. We try to see everything, to visit everywhere!

We take the lift to the top of Mount Storshtenen, this is the best place to see the famous polar night, dine in a mountain restaurant and enjoy a panoramic view of the city.

The most famous symbol of the city is the Arctic Cathedral, whose unique architecture resembles snow and icebergs. The mosaic windows of the cathedral are the largest in Europe!

We visit the Arctic Alpine Botanical Garden, where alpine plants from all over the world are presented. Annotated signs in Norwegian and English, comfortable benches, fjord views.
