If you're in St. Wolfgang, don't miss the Schafberg climb.
A steam locomotive goes up the mountain on special gear rails. A steam locomotive in the literal sense of the word, runs on coal and water, rich black smoke included. The climb is quite steep. While climbing on the train, picturesque views of St. Wolfgang and the lake open up. There is an intermediate station where water is replenished. At the top there is a hotel and several cafe-restaurants. You can climb higher to the observation deck to the hotel. You can go down below the level of the station and admire the surrounding beauty. There are benches.
If you like outdoor activities, then there are several trekking routes on the mountain. But for walking you need appropriate shoes and preferably trekking poles.

I read a variety of reviews about the trip to Schafberg from "wow" to very negative. I have the most pleasant memories. Although it all started sadly.
There was only one day in which it was theoretically possible to climb the mountain. I open my eyes and it's raining. But the rain stopped almost immediately and, despite the fog over the mountain, we decided to go. We lived nearby, so we caught the first train. The car was almost empty - the two of us, a few Japanese and a hotel or restaurant worker who was carrying groceries up. For 45 minutes of a trip up, I ran around almost all the windows. Above, at the beginning everything was in a fog, and after 5 minutes (they didn’t even have time to get upset), the fog began to dissipate. The views from the mountain are fantastic, the air is clean. Lovers and connoisseurs of plants - carefully look under your feet, there are so many different herbs-flowers ...And the clouds that are reflected in the lake ...In general, a complete delight.

Practical information. The railway operates from April to October. There are a few more dates for Advent in December. The cost of an adult round-trip ticket as of 14.09.
2015 - 33 euros, there are different types of reduced tickets. When you go up, you need to register a ticket for a trip down. Site http://www. schafbergbahn. at/content/website_schafbergbahn/de_at.html
