The history of Bruges as a city begins with Burg Square. On this site, Count Baudouin built a castle surrounded by a fortress wall to protect against the Vikings. Then the castle was destroyed, the square was completed and today it is a real showcase where you can get acquainted with the whole variety of European architectural styles:
- City Hall (Stadhuis). Gothic style (14th century). Decorated with statues of biblical characters and Flemish historical figures.
- The Old Chancery of the Court (D'Oude Civiele Griffie Brugge). Flemish Renaissance (16th century). A gilded statue of Justitia stands guard over the pediment, since until the end of the 19th century a court was located in this building.
- Baroque residences of the Prevost (17th century). Here once was the Cathedral of St. Donatius.
