Grontenmarkt Square - "Old Market", in the historic center of Ghent - one of the oldest squares in the city, formerly called the "Fish Market". Here, from 1366 to 1689, the main fish market of Ghent was located. In medieval times, the city's pillar of shame towered on the Grontenmarkt. From the beginning of the 18th century to the present day, an indoor vegetable market has been operating on the square. In the western part of the square is the Big House of the former butchers' guild, built at the beginning of the 15th century. There is a butcher's shop and a cafe with Gand's hams hanging from the ceiling, Ghent's signature product, which can be bought here along with other local delicacies.
