Museum of the History of Winemaking

Museum Of Wine, Wine Museum
Bulgaria, Sandanski
The Museum of Winemaking is located in the south-west of Bulgaria in the town of Melnik, one of the most significant centers of winemaking in the country, 23 km from the famous resort of Sandanski and 186 km from Sofia. Melnik is famous for its unique wine made from the Shiroka Melnishka Loza red grape variety, which grows only in the Struma River Valley, and is used to make table and dessert wines of the highest quality. At one time, up to 500 liters of such wine were annually supplied to England by order of Sir Winston Churchill.
The museum was opened in 2013 to acquaint visitors with the centuries-old history of wine production and consumption. The exposition of the museum, located in several halls, includes collections of tools for planting grapes, equipment and technologies for the production of wine and brandy, containers for their storage, old photographs on the topic of winemaking. The museum has a small tasting room where visitors can taste several varieties of red and white wine, as well as sip homemade brandy. In the wine cellar, built according to ancient technology, there is an exhibition and sale of local wines from 400 bottles, starting from the bottling of 2000, which is replenished immediately after purchases. The Wine Museum in Melnik, together with the local Kordopoulos Wine House, is included in the program of wine tours in Bulgaria.

We ended up in Melnik passing from Kavala (Greece) to Odessa. It was a gift for the time wasted in supermarkets and road stops. The first impression is a fairy tale. The river, bridges, small houses of the original construction, and the background in the background is just super. At the foot of the Pirin Mountains, the sandy-chalk cliffs are amazingly beautiful. Melnik is located in a gorge and from everywhere bizarre yellow pyramids and cliffs rise above the tiled roofs. Melnik is the smallest town in the country with a population of only 390 people.
