gastown
Canada, Vancouver
Gastown is the birthplace of Vancouver, a repository of its history and traditions, and was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1971. There are many Victorian buildings, cobbled streets, numerous clubs, shops, restaurants and entertainment venues, Chinatown adjoins Gastown. A steam clock was installed on the corner of Cambie and Water Streets in 1977, honking the sound of London's Big Ben every 15 minutes. The building of the Waterfront station, located on the border of the Central District and Gastown, is one of the most beautiful in the city, in front of it there is a bronze monument to the victims of two World Wars. On Maple Square there is a monument to the founder of Gastown - the glorious Gussie Jack Dayton - the owner of the saloon, with a pedestal in the form of a barrel. Each year, Gastown hosts the Vancouver International Jazz Festival and the Vancouver Cycle Race.
