Piazza Colleggiata

Piazza Collegiata, Piazza Grande, Large Square
Switzerland, Bellinzona
Piazza Colleggiata is the central square of the old town, close to Montebello Castle. In the 16th century, the church of Saints Peter and Stephen was erected here, for the convenience of access to which a number of buildings were demolished. The square acquired its present form in the 18th century, after richly decorated houses belonging to local aristocrats were built along its perimeter.

Piazza Collegiata, also called Piazza Grande, is the very center of the old city, the venue for the Saturday market and traditional meetings of the townspeople. In fact, the current appearance of the square was formed in the middle of the 16th century, when several buildings were demolished to provide access to the monastery church. On the facade of one of the square's buildings, the memory of famous scientists and inventors is immortalized - their bas-reliefs are installed in oval niches. And above the entire area rises the Church of St.
