Prague Loreta

Pražská Loreta, Church of the Nativity, Kostel Narození
Czech republic, Prague
Loreta or the Church of the Nativity of the Lord is a church standing on Loretan Square in the Prague district of Hradcany. It was built in 1631 in the Baroque style, based on the Holy Hut of the Italian city of Loreto. Starting from August 15, 1695, the chime of the bells is heard every hour from the clock tower of Loreta. The church is famous for its Renaissance-style main altar, as well as a rich collection of works of art.

Loreta or Prague Loreta is the abbreviated name of the Church of the Nativity of the Lord, located in Hradč any on Loreta Square. The beginning of this complex was laid in 1626, when Baroness Catherine Benino of Lobkowice wanted to build a copy of the hut of the Virgin Mary, located in the Italian city of Loreto. She allocated money and land for construction. Even the masters from Vienna called herself. The hut was built, and a church was built next to it. After the Battle of White Mountain, when Protestants were defeated and Czech Catholics took control of the city, the Catholic Church began to actively involve the people in the bosom of Catholicism.

In the church there is a well-known, far beyond the borders of the Czech Republic, the treasury of the Prague Loreta. The pearl of the collection is the "Prague Sun" - a monster weighing 12 kg with 6222 diamonds.

This beautiful and well-preserved old monastery is located near the castle. Loreta is considered one of the richest monasteries in Prague. It used to be a place of pilgrimage, but now it is a quiet and peaceful place with an interesting exhibition. They take money for taking pictures of the monastery, but the photos are worth it. Inside the building, you will see many religious artifacts, jewelry and gems. In addition, there are many interesting statues on its territory.

My acquaintance with Loreta began with the crystal chime of the bells on the clock tower. Installed back in 1695, they still regularly, every hour, sing a song to the glory of the Virgin Mary. The Baroque Church of the Nativity of Christ is considered one of the best in Prague. And the chapel "Holy hut" built in the 12th century deserves attention. There was no question of going or not going for me, I really wanted to look at the famous "Prague Sun".
