Old Town Hall and Prague Astronomical Clock

Staroměstská radnice, Old Town Hall, Prague Orloj, Pražský orloj, Prague Astronomical Clock
Czech republic, Prague
The Old Town Hall in Prague was founded in 1338 on the basis of a privilege granted to the Old Town citizens by King John of Luxembourg. The complex consists of several houses adjacent to the Old Town Square and gradually combined into one for the needs of the Prague Old Town Magistrate.

The Prague Astronomical Clock, Prague Orloj is a medieval tower clock installed on the south wall of the tower of the Old Town Hall on the Old Town Square in Prague. The watch shows years, months, days and hours, sunrise and sunset times, moonrise and moonset times, and the positions of the zodiac signs. In the center of the dial is the Earth, around which the Sun revolves. Every hour, when the clock strikes, there is a small performance in the tradition of a medieval puppet theater. The figures, which are the embodiments of human vices and such dominants of human life as death or retribution for sins, begin to move: the skeleton pulls the bell rope, the angel raises and lowers the punishing sword. In the windows of the clock, the faces of the apostles replace each other, and in the finale the rooster crows.

The Old Town Hall is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the Czech Republic. Every hour there is a whole performance with an astronomical clock. You will not remain indifferent, watching the movement of the figures and the sound design.

Watch the video - it will explain a lot. When the clock strikes the hour (from 9.00 to 23.00), a procession of twelve apostles and other figures begins to move. The apostles, who are recognized by their attributes, appear in the windows of the clock. In addition to the figures of the apostles on the clock are several symbolic figures. Above is a rooster, which is a symbol of life. Below the rooster is a stone angel. To the left of the dials are figures of a vain man who admires himself in the mirror and is a symbol of human vanity and a figure of a miser who symbolizes vices and greed.

Making a short tour of Europe, I had the good fortune to see an amazing sight in Prague. The Prague medieval clock, made at the very beginning of the 15th century, can truly be called a brilliant creation even by the standards of the twentieth century. The chimes show in addition to the time of the Czech Republic, the time of other countries, and various astronomical phenomena of the rising and setting of the sun of the moon, the zodiac circle and much more. At the end of each hour, you can see various figures of symbols on the clock and, if you're lucky, you can hear the voice of a golden rooster that crows at a certain time.

The astronomical clock, or, as it is also called, the Prague Eagle, is one of the main attractions of Prague. They started working in 1410, and earned themselves fame all over the world. The clock consists of three parts - astronomical, calendar and animation. The real show is the moving figures of the apostles and images of vanity, greed, death and the Turk. This action is available to the eyes of tourists around the clock. There are also many pubs in the area from which the Astronomical Clock can be seen.

The Prague "Orloj" is perhaps one of the most famous and unusual clocks in the world. Every time you look at them, you forget what you really wanted to know: ) Your eyes just run up the dial! And of course, every hour, crowds of tourists gather to watch a small puppet show. Practical moment - watch your bags and wallets! Because pickpockets are also very fond of when tourists enthusiastically watch the performance, forgetting about everything in the world.
