IG Farben building

IG Farben Building, Poelzig Building, Poelzig Complex
Germany, Frankfurt am Main
The IG Farben Building Complex or the Poelzig Complex (named after the architect) was built in 1928-1930 for the headquarters of the world's largest chemical concern IG Farbenindustry. The monumental nine-story building became the largest office building in Europe and symbolized the power of German capitalism. The complex has six rectangular wings, each wing is dedicated to a company belonging to the concern, among them - Agfa, BASF, Bayer. The IG Farbenindustri concern was involved in the production of Zyklon-B, used by the Nazi regime in the gas chambers of concentration camps.
From 1949 to 1952, the headquarters of the Allied High Command, headed by General Eisenhower, was located here. After the end of the Cold War, the IG Farben building was purchased for the needs of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University of Frankfurt. In 2001, after a three-year renovation, the complex was opened as the Westend campus. In front of the complex there is a memorial plaque with the history of the building and a reminder of the victims of concentration camps.
