Saint Felip Neri Square

Plaça de Sant Felip Neri, Plaza Sant Felip Neri
Spain, Barcelona
St. Felip Neri Square is tucked away in the middle of the Gothic Quarter. In the Middle Ages, this place was a Jewish cemetery and a burial place for the condemned. In the middle of the 18th century, the church of St. Philip Neri was built here, which today is considered the main attraction of the square. In 1938 it was bombed, killing 42 people. And even now, traces of this terrible event can be seen on the facade of buildings.

Plaç a Sant Felip Neri is such a quiet corner of the always noisy Gothic Quarter. A modest fountain is located in the center of the square, and the dominant feature of the square is the Felip Neri Church with a simple and austere facade (the building dates back to the 18th century). The entire facade of the church is littered with potholes from a bomb that exploded in the middle of the square during one of the air raids in 1937, killing two dozen people.
