Tomb of Columbus in Seville

Tomb of Christopher Columbus, La tumba de Cristóbal Colón, Tomb of Christopher Columbus in Seville
Spain, Seville
The remains of Christopher Columbus have been buried since 1898 in the Seville Cathedral, however, the history of the burial of the great navigator and traveler is very complicated - his ashes were transported many times to different cities and countries on over 300 years. Now the tomb of Columbus attracts many tourists and is one of the treasures of the Cathedral. The grave of Columbus acquired its current sculptural appearance at the end of the 19th century, and his early burial is marked by a slab on the floor. The coffin of Columbus is carried on their shoulders by four heralds, personifying the four kingdoms of medieval Spain - Aragon, Castile, Leon and Navarre. The coffin itself is set at a height above the ground, which is uncharacteristic for the Catholic Church, but this only reflects the veneration of the outstanding discoverer and partially satisfies the will of Columbus not to be buried on Spanish soil. There is also a 16th-century fresco on the wall next to the grave depicting St. Christopher.

3 tombs of Columbus are known, each of which, according to the guides, claims to be authentic. Columbus died in 1506. Emperor Charles V considered himself obliged to fulfill the will of the Great discoverer and ordered the remains to be transferred from Seville, where the navigator was originally buried, to Santo Domingo. However, over time, Spain began to be ousted from the American continent, the French reigned on the island of Hispaniola, who renamed it Haiti. The ashes were transported to Cuba in the Havana Cathedral, but Spain also had to leave Cuba, losing the war provoked by the United States.
