Baths of Constantine

Thermes de Constantin
France, Arles
The Baths of Constantine is located on the banks of the Rhone near the Amphitheater. Built at the beginning of the 4th century, they were discovered by French historians in the 16th century. Among the ruins of the thermae, one can find the remains of a caldarium (places for taking hot baths), a tepidarium (a room with warm baths), a laconium (a room with dry steam), as well as a hypocaust - a two-layer floor, under which air heated by furnaces flowed.

These are ancient Roman baths, erected at a time when Emperor Constantine was in Arles (4th century). Public baths, which were heated by hot air flowing through channels in the floor and walls, gradually turned into complex structures with many rooms: a dressing room, rooms with cold, cool and hot water, a ball game room, gymnasiums, libraries, rooms for conversations. and academic pursuits. In the 19th century, the Baths were partially cleared. At the moment, only the northern part of the building is visible.
