Blois castle

Blois Palace-Castle, Château de Blois, Château de Blois
France, Blois
The royal castle of Blois is located on a hilltop in the city of the same name in the Loire Valley. The castle is unique in that it combines parts built at different times and in different styles - Gothic, Renaissance and Classicism. It is a clear example of the development of French architecture from the 15th to the 17th centuries. Blois Castle consists of several parts: built in the XV century. in the gothic style of the wing of Louis XII, built a little later than the wing of Francis I in the Renaissance style and the extension of the Prince of Orleans (XVII century) in the style of classicism. In the appearance of the royal castle of Blois, there are various symbols of royal power - the initials and emblems of the owners of the castle, as well as statues and other decorations. Of all the rooms of the castle, of particular interest are the Hall of the States General, the Hall of the Guards, the front spiral staircase of Francis I, the Room of Catherine de Medici, the office of Francis I (with caches in which Catherine de Medici kept her poisons), as well as the Royal Chambers and the Hall of Councils, where the famous assassination of the Duke of Guise and his brother, the Cardinal of Lorraine, took place. This castle contains more than 35,000 works from different eras, on display in the royal chambers and in the Museum of Fine Arts located here. During its long history, the castle has experienced many events, ruin during the years of the revolution, a period of prosperity and decline, but now it is one of the national treasures of France.

Blois Castle is a whole complex that unites 4 wings around the courtyard. It is not only the grandeur of the building, marvelous stained-glass windows, masterfully executed stucco and tapestries from the collection of Catherine de Medici, but also the history of this masterpiece of architecture that is amazing. The history of the castle began in the 9th century, when it was a small fortress. Since then, the owners of the castle have been the counts of Blois, Duke Louis of Orleans and his son Charles, who made the castle a kind of center of French poetry and art.

It is necessary to allocate at least 3 hours to inspect the castle, less does not make sense. I always prepare to visit such places in advance. Be sure to read the history of the castle, this will give you the opportunity not only to contemplate the exhibits, but also to feel everything that happened in it. We arrived in the evening to collect the most complete picture of impressions. In the castle courtyard from April to September at 22h. hold a light and music show with a reproduction of major events in the history of the castle.

Blois (Blois) and the surrounding area were the possessions of the counts of Blois from the middle of the X century, but the castle was here before. Times were difficult and the owners turned the castle into a fortress by the 13th century. Since then, the Corner Tower and the Ceremonial Hall have been preserved, where the States General convened in the Middle Ages, which is reflected in the name of the spacious hall. Under Louis XII, Blois actually became the capital of what was then France. The royal power was indisputable, it never occurred to anyone to start a fight with it, and this made it possible to rebuild the castle into a ceremonial royal residence.
