St. Andrew's Cathedral in Bordeaux

Cathédrale saint-André de bordeaux
France, Bordeaux
The Cathedral of St. Andrew in Bordeaux is a real symbol of the city, personifying a centuries -old history, sophisticated architecture and deep spiritual meaning. Located in the heart of the historical center, this Gothic masterpiece surprises with its scale and details, attracting tourists from around the world.
The Cathedral of St. Andrew is the most significant religious structure of the city. Since 1998, UNESCO is included in the World Heritage List, as it is located on the French section of St. James.
Its story goes to the XI century, when the Romanesque church was erected at this place. However, it was the Gothic cathedral, the construction of which began in the XII century and lasted several centuries, that gives it today's magnificent appearance. One of the most important events related to the cathedral was the wedding of the Aquitaine Eleanor, one of the most influential women of the Middle Ages, and the future king of France Louis VII in 1137.
This event made the cathedral a witness to an important page in European history.
The architecture of the cathedral is a vivid example of the French Gothic. Its facade is decorated with two massive bell towers reaching a height of 81 meters and dominate the panorama of Bordeaux. Although the towers look somewhat different, it only gives them a special charm. The western portal of the cathedral amazes with its sculptural composition depicting a scene from the Bible and the life of the saints.
The interior decoration of the cathedral is no less impressive. High lancers supported by slender columns create a feeling of space and airiness. The cathedral is famous for its magnificent stained -glass windows, scattering light, filling the interior with colorful glare and creating a special atmosphere of peace and greatness. Special attention is deserved by stained -glass choirs telling biblical stories in bright colors.
Near the main building of the cathedral is a separate bell tower-Tour Pay-Berland. This elegant Gothic tower was erected in the 15th century and was not originally part of the cathedral. Today, a fascinating view of Bordeaux and its environs is opened from its observation deck. The rise to the tower, although it requires overcoming a significant number of steps, is certainly worth the effort.
The Cathedral of St. Andrew is not only an important religious structure, but also a significant cultural center of Bordeaux. There are regular services, spiritual music concerts and other cultural events regularly. Visiting the cathedral is a great opportunity to touch the history of the city, enjoy the grandeur of Gothic architecture and feel the spiritual atmosphere of this special place.
The walk around the cathedral will also allow you to evaluate the beauty of nearby squares and historical buildings, creating an unforgettable impressions of Bordeaux.

The cathedral is part of the pilgrimage route of St. James to the Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela and was consecrated by Pope Urban II in 1096. From the original church, built in the Romanesque style, only the remains of the nave wall have survived. The Royal Gate dates from the 13th century, and the rest of the cathedral was built mainly in the 14th and 15th centuries. The Cathedral of St. Andrew the Apostle is decorated with tall Gothic spiers that have towered over the city for almost a thousand years.
