Fortress of Carcassonne

Fortress of Carcassonne, Cité de Carcassonne, ville fortifiée de Carcassonne
France, Carcassonne
The fortress (Cité) of Carcassonne is located on the right bank of the Aude River, southeast of the modern city of Carcassonne, Aude department, France.
The history of the city and the fortress begins with the Gallo-Roman period of France. The ancient city of Carcassonne was surrounded by a double wall about 3 km long with 52 towers. On the territory of the fortified city are the count's castle and the Basilica of St. Nazarius.
The medieval city occupied an important strategic position in the south of France, controlling the main possible directions of movement in the region.
The fortress of Carcassonne is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The first mention of a fortified settlement on Karkas Hill dates back to 800 BC. Then there was a Gallo-Roman city, later a Visigothic fortress, an Arab capture, a county, a viscountcy, and, finally, a royal seneschalship (seneschal is one of the highest court positions in the 10th-12th centuries).
All these periods are reflected in the architecture and features of the arrangement of the territory of the fortress.
Since 1849, the restoration of the fortress was carried out. The work gave the fortress the status of a monument of art. In 1903, it was transferred to the French Ministry of Culture.
In 1961, a museum was created in the fortress.

The fortress is known as an almost completely preserved (more precisely, well-restored) system of powerful medieval fortifications. Seeing it up close, one simply marvels at how such a thing could have been built so long ago and how one can even try to besiege such an impregnable structure. Two rows of fortress walls, 52 towers, inside the castle - few places else can so clearly plunge into the atmosphere of the Middle Ages. It seems that he got to many centuries ago in a time machine. Previously, Carcassonne was an important and wealthy city in the Languedoc, many Cathars (Albigensians) lived here - adherents of a religious doctrine declared heresy in 1179.
