Barbarossa Tower

Tour Barbe Rousse, Redbeard Tower
France, Gruissan
The Barbarossa Tower is located in the coastal town of Gruissan in the Aude department in France.
This tower is all that remains of a castle built at the end of the 10th century to watch over the approaches to the harbor at Narbonne and to protect against naval incursions into the city. Built on a steep rocky hill, the castle was enlarged in the 12th century by the archbishop of Narbonne, Guillaume de Broa.
In the 16th century, the castle was dismantled by order of Richelieu and has been in disrepair ever since.
The view from the castle grounds to the town and the surrounding coastline is quite impressive. The tower and castle ruins are listed as historical monuments by the French Ministry of Culture.

The remains of the tower are all that unfortunately remains of the fortress. It is definitely worth going up there, as it offers panoramic views of all the surroundings, the sea, the beach, salt ponds, flocks of flamingos on the bay ...The visit is free, there were no people at all.
