Vieille Charite
France, Marseille
The old almshouse is located in the center of the Pagnier quarter. It was built in the 17th century by the decision of the city authorities especially for the poor and needy. The almshouse was built of pink and white Couronne stone in the Baroque style. Its chapel stands out for its egg-shaped dome. On the facade of the temple, an allegory of Mercy is depicted, surrounded by pelicans with chicks, meeting poor children.

Now the building of the almshouse houses a cultural center.

The old almshouse (Vieille Charite) is located in the heart of the Panier quarter (Le Panier). The almshouse was built in the 17th century in order, according to the royal decree and the decision of the city authorities of Marseille, "...to isolate the poor and impoverished citizens in a proper place. " Such a place turned out to be the area near the cathedral. Since 1986, a scientific and cultural center has been located in the former almshouse. Address: Rue de la Charite, 2
