Chateau d'If

Château d'If, Monte Cristo Island
France, Marseille
Chateau d'If is a military fortress near the coast of Marseille, built in the 16th century. on a small island to protect the city from the sea. However, this defensive fort soon turned into a gloomy prison, where especially dangerous criminals were kept. The Chateau d'If became famous thanks to its two prisoners: Edmond Dantes (Count of Monte Cristo) and the Iron Mask. In the fortress, expositions are arranged in the cells of these prisoners, a souvenir shop and a cafe with a wonderful view of Marseille are open. You can get to the castle by boat from Marseille's Old Port.

The Frioul archipelago in the Gulf of Marseilles includes several islands of various sizes, which in ancient times were used as a habitat for a dubious public. By order of King Francis I, in 1524-1531, a fortress was built on one of the small islands closest to Marseille. This is not the only fortification in the archipelago, there are fortifications to protect Marseilles on other, more significant islands, respectively, and the fortresses there are more serious. And the castle of If, according to experts, was built rather carelessly and had no great defense value.
