Volcano Montagne Pele

France, Martinique
The volcano is located on the French island of Martinique in the Caribbean. The name of this giant is translated as "Bald Mountain". The volcano gained notoriety after an eruption in 1902, as a result of which a pyroclastic flow (a mixture of hot gases, ash and rock fragments) hit the nearby city of Saint-Pierre. As a result, about thirty thousand local residents died, and the city itself was destroyed. Today, the volcano belongs to the so-called "sleeping" - its last activity was recorded in the 30s of the last century. Montagne Pele is the highest point of the island. Its height is 1397 meters. The diameter of the base is 15 kilometers. The crater of the volcano has an oval shape, its dimensions are 1000 by 750 meters. At the foot of Montagne Pele is the Museum of Volcanism.

Before getting to the Mont Pele volcano, I contemplated it regularly for a couple of months, because it can be seen in sunny weather from almost anywhere on the island of Martinique. It was noticeable that the top is almost always in the clouds. And so it turned out for us. The entire ascent to the crater was foggy, then at times the sun broke through. Because of this, there are fewer successful photos than we would like. The starting point is at an altitude of about 600 m. The ascent goes at times (mostly? ) along a ridge 10-15 m wide.
